This Systems Engineer role is located in Dulles, VA, supporting our National Security Space Systems programs that include technical roles at the mission, segment, and component levels. They span the entire program life cycle from early concept studies, design development, system integration/test, launch and early operations, mission operations/sustainment, and system disposal. Programs range from small feasibility studies to medium-sized on-orbit technology demonstrations and large-scale national systems. This systems engineering position will support a ground-based service-oriented architecture intended to service next-generation space capability.

The responsibilities of this role include:

  • CONOPS and mission analysis

  • Systems architecture development that optimizes ground system design, space vehicle design, and mission success

  • Requirements management

  • Interface management and interface control documentation

  • Systems-level integration and test for a ground system

  • Verification and validation of requirements

  • Resource logistics planning and execution

The ideal candidate for this position will have equal parts technical competency, forward-thinking ideas, and a focus on execution. This position requires a functional understanding of ground system networking, private cloud deployments, data and messaging busses, software deployment, and hardware deployment. This position requires frequent organized and solutions-oriented interaction with external entities who are contributing elements of the integrated ground segment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Systems Engineer 4 - Bachelor’s Degree in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math or related area and 9+ years of experience, Master’s Degree and 7+ years of experience; or a PhD and 4+ years of experience. 

  • Must have U.S. Citizenship with a current or active Top Secret clearance and have the ability to obtain SCI level access.

  • Prior experience with ground systems

  • Knowledge of space-to-ground and mission architecture development

  • Understanding of Agile software development practices, including the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)

  • Experience in requirements development, management, and verification

  • Experience in developing and managing Interface Control Documents (ICDs)

  • Demonstrated communication and technical writing skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with a space systems development program

  • Experience with spacecraft mission operations

  • Experience in Model Based Systems Engineering and Cameo Systems Modeler


Salary Range: $125,800 USD - $188,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
