Northrop Grumman Tactical Space Systems is seeking a Sr. Principal Systems Engineer. This position will be located in Dulles, VA and will support Tactical Space Systems Division in their development and deployment of satellite ground software to customer resources. You will be the External Interface Lead as well as a member of a thread team comprised of Systems Engineers.  In this External Interface Lead role you will be working with multiple internal and external customer communities to define details of external interfaces. Candidates in this role will be expected to be comfortable with frequent inter-organization and customer interaction and teaming. You will become familiar with the systems and their interactions to establish well defined and correct interfaces. As a Systems Engineering thread team member, you will support the full life-cycle of a system capability execution from definition, decomposition, implementation to verification.

What You’ll Get to Do:

  • Maintain the product’s external interface control document (ICD) (such as UCI and GMSEC)
  • Identify and define the messages exchanged between the software product and external systems
  • Facilitate the capability execution, supporting all aspects for a given capability to provide continuity across the whole life cycle of the capability to include the refinement and acceptance of a capability, system design and software feature decomposition, and software scrum team support
  • Support capability I&T and verification activities
  • Maintain MBSE model content associated with your thread, including but not limited to ensuring the model is kept up-to-date with the system baseline as interfaces change (e.g. protobuf messages), components are added/removed, etc. and new capabilities are implemented into the software
  • Develop a deep of understanding of their thread team’s focus area and how the program supports each capability allocated to their thread
  • Know the “how we fit in” for their thread within both Raptor and the larger enterprise, when applicable
  • Raise schedule delays and problems as they occur, to get blockers and impediments removed as quickly as possible

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Engineering, Science or related technical field and at least 9 years of applicable experience, an MS Degree and 7 years of applicable experience, or a PhD Degree and 4 years of applicable experience
  • Either a working knowledge of systems engineering principles and processes; experience operating SVs or working knowledge/experience in aerospace engineering
  • Demonstrated experience quickly learning new concepts and approaches
  • Demonstrated proficiency in analytical thinking and problem-solving skills and Systems thinking mindset
  • Must have US Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain Security Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active or current TS/SCI clearance
  • Experience with requirements analysis, definition, and decomposition
  • Experience with interface standards such as UCIor GMSEC
  • Expericence with OMS systems and architecture compliance
  • Familiarity with tools for doing XML schema analysis and verification, such as XMLSpy
  • Familiarity with Google Protbuf messages
  • Familiarity with space ground software and operations
  • Experience with DOORS, Confluence, and JIRA
  • Experience with Agile development
  • Familiarity and/or experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering languages (SysML/UML), concepts and tools (e.g., Cameo)

Salary Range: $125,800 USD - $188,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
