Northrop Grumman's Dulles Satellite Manufacturing Facility integrates, tests, and launches state-of-the-art space vehicles.  This includes commercial communications and broadcasting satellites, Earth and space science spacecraft, national security satellites and deep-space spacecraft in support of missions for commercial and government Earth imaging, space science, communications and national defense. Northrop Grumman, Strategic Space Systems Division, has an opening for a Manager of Mechanical Engineering  1 to join our team of highly qualified and diverse individuals. This position will be located in Dulles, Virginia. This position is for a front line manager who will manage a small to medium sized team of integration and test engineers while maintaining an active role in support of programs.  The expectation of this management position is approximately 80% direct program support and 20% functional management.  Teams will be sized appropriately to allow for this balance.  You will work with other front line managers and the department manager to provide common direction, goals and expectations to the I&T mechanical engineering team.   -  No design work; manufacturing production environment where Engineers coordinate system-level builds and empower touch-labor Technicians.  Daily interfacing with Program managers, Functional supervisors, and other disciplines like Elec/RF/QA is required, so good communication skills under occasionally stressful situations is essential. -  Hands-on work around extremely fragile space product installations and modifications. -  Expert technical knowledge in manufacturing including interpreting complex engineering drawings, schematics, and diagrams.  Works with Design Engs to review pre-release drawings and provides feedback to minimize design impacts on downstream manufacturability.  Anticipates cross-product implications and lessons learned. -  100% adherence to established ISO processes, diligence to detail, and efficient execution with quality results for cost effectiveness *absolutely required*. Suggests and evaluates Process Improvement ideas.  Continuously strives for cost/schedule reductions at product line level. -  Ability to proactively identify issues, escalate to appropriate channels, and *offer* solutions to engineering for review.  Works independently with QA on difficult/challenging solutions and projects from Engineering. -  Ability to work with diverse team, take constructive feedback from Safety and QA support personnel, and understudy with assigned mentor for up to 3 months is required. -  Responsible and evaluated for performance metrics with heavy emphasis on the effectiveness of the team you will manage in regards to overall quality of work, efficiency, and process improvements.  Proactively helps improve the team's performance in numerous disciplines.  

Basic Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree with at least 1 year of experience leading or supervising a team or projects, or 4 additional years of experience leading a team in lieu of the Degree.
  • 5+ years of Integration and testing experience
  • Must have demonstrated management/leadership skills and the ability to work both independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in a fast paced environment.
  • US citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Security Clearance
  • Ability to establish schedules and workflows with the capability to manage and schedule quickly changing priorities
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills and technical presentation experience
  • Second/third shift 24/7, weekend work, and occasional travel are *required* of everyone.  A rotating off-shift coverage allows Engineers to plan ahead up to 3 months, but last minute requests are common to support the dynamic schedules seen in I&T.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of basic 3D Modeling, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, general computer handling, and Tool Control helpful but not required.  ESD, FOD, and 5S management techniques strongly recommended.   TipQA, Windchill, MES, Costpoint, and CREOView preferred.
  • Ability to foresee and communicate multiple project level tasks and interactions beyond day-to-day assignments with Estimates To Completes.  Helps plan lookaheads and avoid pitfalls with projects and its leadership.  Participates in complex nonconformance resolutions.
  • Helps manage tactical floor operations, including resource loading, priorities, and communication with numerous project/program teams.  Having experience in this area is preferred.
  • Experience with working inside Clean Rooms, Hazardous Material Handling, Hazardous Operations protocols, and related operational protocols strongly preferred.
  • Industry knowledge of new processes and materials, with continual efforts for cost reduction and process improvements.  Ability to research, propose improvements, develop ROI, test, and communicate with management regarding new proposals.
  • Focus for this level is *team management and innovation* through cross product line tactical operations, process improvements, solutions.  All operations require a "Buddy system" for checks and balances.
