Adaptive Optics Xinetics (AOX), a wholly owned Northrop Grumman Space Systems, Payload and Ground Systems Division Business Venture, is a leading supplier of complex electro-optic and photonic systems and subsystems that control and manipulate light waves for a variety of applications. We are seeking a Mechanical Technician to support our Mechanical Engineering Special Programs team in East Hartford, CT.

Position Description:

Reporting to the Special Programs Mechanical Engineering Manager, the Mechanical technician will perform a variety of duties assisting Mechanical Engineers in the development of mechanical, electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical engineering designs, tests, fabrications, assemblies, components and fixturing. This position provides an exciting technical opportunity in a high-growth, strategically important business for NGSP. We are looking for an individual with exceptional people skills. Our ideal candidate will motivate peers to improve processes and products, has excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills. They must have a record of a collaborative approach with peers/peer organizations. Specifically, the details of the position are the following:

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Support the mechanical engineering department on multiple projects through all phases of development and manufacturing

  • Set up and test prototype units and subassemblies under operational conditions using various types of test equipment

  • Support transition from design to production and manufacturing engineering

  • Provide technical solutions to complex problems which require regular use of technical acumen, ingenuity, and creativity

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma and 10+ years related experience

  • Ability to prioritize time and projects to meet customer deadlines

  • Ability to work with little or no supervision

  • Develop and manufacture fixtures, tools, and aids to perform customer objectives

  • Excellent organizational skills, with high attention to detail

  • A solid understanding of manufacturing, with technical knowledge

  • Ability to communicate status of project tasks

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast paced, highly technical work environment

  • Responsible self-starter and team player with mechanical or manufacturing experience

  • Great problem-solving skills

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint software

  • Intermediate-Advanced SolidWorks (or equivalent) software skills

  • Active Top Secret Clearance

  • US Citizenship is a bona fide requirement

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with micro or small precision form factor mechanisms; opto-mechanical designs; optical assembly, interferometer and alignment, test equipment and tools

  • 3D Printing Experience (operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, fixing, etc…)

  • Fiber optic experience (handling, terminating, routing, fabrication, etc…)

  • Electrical experience (PCB handling, cable construction, soldering, etc…)

Working Environment & Physical Demands:

  • Travel to customer site as required (10%)

  • Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of times and light physical effort as required


Salary Range: $70,700 USD - $117,800 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
