Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is currently seeking a Manager, Research Scientist 2 for our Elkton, Maryland location.

The Northrop Grumman Propulsion Systems and Controls (PS&C) facility in Elkton, Maryland began solid-propellant rocket operations in 1948. Today, the Elkton PS&C facility designs, develops, and produces solid-propellant propulsion and ordnance systems in programs professionally managed for a wide variety of Government and commercial customers.  The facility also serves as the hub for offsite engineering and test facilities in Ronkonkoma, NY, Palm Beach Gardens, FL and San Jose, CA.

Elkton, Maryland is located on the Upper Chesapeake Bay, midway between Philadelphia and Baltimore. Job Summary

This research and development management position is responsible for the formulation, recommendations, and direction of research and development programs. Has responsibility for assigning and directing both fundamental and theoretical investigations as well as work on existing products and processes.  This is a working manager position.   The incumbent will be expected to lead a team of research scientists and function as a research scientist for select projects.  The research scientist role initiates the design, development, execution, and implementation of technology research projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions and products. Research scientist responsibilities include; defining and executing research tasks, analyzing data, publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting research at scientific conferences. Capable of defining research projects for their projects with a focus on answering fundamental questions in basic science. Plans and executes applied research. Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories and may contribute to scientific literature and conferences. May participate in development of patent applications. May coordinate interdepartmental activities and research efforts.


Provide objective-oriented direction to team of research scientists utilizing management guidelines and general polices.  Lead and develop team of research scientists with one-on-one meetings, prompt feedback, and formal reviews.  Work closely with project and integrated product teams (IPT) to develop advanced propulsion systems.  Oversee propellant development, characterization, and manufacturing.  Work closely with systems engineers, project engineers and quality engineers to ensure requirements are met.  Serve as an Energetics Technology & Laboratories liaison between IPTs and Manufacturing.  Document and present development, manufacturing status, and testing results as needed. Support marketing and proposal initiatives.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree required, PhD degree in Chemistry highly preferred
  • 10 years of experience in polymer science, organic or inorganic chemistry within a laboratory setting
  • Ability to lead a team of research scientists
  • Ability to oversee projects and tasks assigned to the organization group
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an IPT as part of an advanced development program
  • Ability and experience with presenting complex technical concepts to technical audiences and management
  • Demonstrated independent work skills, technical expertise, innovation, problem solving and decision making
  • Candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience with statistical experimental design, multi-variate data analysis and other scientific software
  • Candidates must be U.S. citizens and capable of obtaining a Secret level government security clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the formulation and testing of solid rocket motor propellants is highly desirable
  • Other relevant formulation experience may be considered, e.g., rubber formulations, adhesives, and coatings
  • Previous management/supervisory experience
  • Active Secret clearance

This position falls under a Federal Explosives License issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for this location.  Candidates hired into this role will be required to complete and submit an Employee Possessor Questionnaire to ATF for approval to be a possessor.


Salary Range: $137,000 USD - $205,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
