Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems (NGAS) is seeking a Functional Homeroom Section Manager to join our team of qualified and diverse individuals. The selected candidate will support the Mechanical Design functional homeroom within in the Vehicle Structures Design and Materials and Processes Department (VSDMP) as part of the South Bay Vehicle Engineering Directorate in El Segundo, CA.
The focus of this section is the design and development of advanced composite structures and mechanical systems for air vehicles. Approximately 20% of the role will be performing functional homeroom duties such as attending functional staff meetings, management of personnel (performance review, direction & coaching), and coordination of job assignments, staffing, recruiting, and developing IRAD projects and process improvement. These responsibilities include:
Providing leadership and direction to section members including day-to-day support for the operation of the functional organization
Ensuring team members have sufficient statements of work
Managing employee performance (including engagement strategies for higher performers and corrective actions for lower performers)
Coordinating with programs to ensure appropriate staffing actions are developed and executed relative to the section
Ensuring employees are familiar with and use required engineering processes and tools
Resolving critical/urgent program/technical issues
The remaining time (approx. 80%) will be spent directing the engineering design effort in support of the program including technology and business development activities, proposals (generate schedules and cost estimates) and design reviews. Responsibilities will include:
Cost, schedule, and technical performance for the Engineering IPT, which can include management of budgets using the EVMS, reporting of variances and all MRB actions.
Providing senior mechanical engineering oversight of all conceptual design, preliminary / layout, and detail design, drawing release, design review presentations
Providing support to fabrication
Leading a large multi-disciplined team of engineers, including interfacing with customers, technical support and meeting schedule and cost commitments
The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, project management skills, experience creating teams, a firm understanding of the design and development process of advanced composite structures, global supply chain, manufacturing engineering, planning, quality engineering, and configuration management.

Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) discipline and 9 years of relevant experience; OR Master’s degree in relevant STEM discipline and 7 years of relevant experience
Experience in aircraft mechanical design
Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in engineering (Mechanical, Engineering, Aerospace or Civil Engineering) from an ABET accredited university
Design experience with an emphasis on the mechanical design of composite structures
Subject Matter Expert level knowledge of composite materials and processes, mechanical and bonded joint processes, and designs
Experience in development of design processes and experience in the management of NCTA funded activities
Experience designing aircraft primary and secondary structures
Excellent leadership skills and/or prior experience managing or leading teams of engineers
Strong communication, project management, and team building skills
Current, active DoD clearance
