Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a Principal/Mechanical Engineer - Aerospace Vehicle Equipment Lab: Design & Integration. This position will be located in Roy, UT and will support the Sentinel – Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) program. This role may offer a competitive relocation assistance package.
What You’ll Get To Do:
As a Mechanical Design engineer for the program's Aerospace Vehicle Equipment (AVE) Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) test bed, you will be primarily responsible for designing the various fixtures and mechanical assemblies required to safely hold hardware in place for test. You may also be asked to support stretch assignments such as design of plumbing for small fluid transfer systems. In this job, you will need to:
- Create mechanical designs that meet interface requirements.
- Release drawings for fabrication
- Organizing your mechanical drawings within a drawing tree
- Conform to drawing release processes
- Analyze requirements and coordinate the results with AVE HWIL stakeholders to ensure the lifecycle functions, needs, and objectives of the test bed are captured and understood.
- Evaluate and translate the user needs into testable functional, performance, and interface System Requirements and verification activities.
- Define the architecture by decomposing and allocating system-level requirements and translating into detailed functional and performance design criteria.
- Synthesize system functional and performance requirements into the physical architecture.
- Examine existing designs and allocate requirements based on existing equipment capabilities, identify modifications that close gaps in HWIL capability needs, and identify equipment limitations that put HWIL test objectives at risk.
- Perform Trade Studies for Make/Buy decisions
- Preparation of formal design reviews, including Critical Design Review, that accurately represents the final HWIL Design Package, and all supporting documentation that are necessary prior to entering the fabrication process.
- Coordinate design progress with stakeholders throughout the HWIL lifecycle.
- Ensure the creation of technical data packages for the HWIL test bed including the test bed concept of operations, interfaces, functional block diagrams, layouts, performance specifications, safety considerations, and security considerations.
- Help to develop, plan, and execute qualification and acceptance test plans, support design and test audits and reviews.
- Support program meetings, provide project status, and interface with a multi-discipline team.

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.
You’ll Bring These Qualifications:
Engineer Mechanical
- 2 Years with Bachelors in Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a position-relevant Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematical (STEM) Area; 0 Years with Masters
- Requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret or Top Secret Clearance within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet business needs.
- Experience creating drawings using Siemens NX
- Experience formally releasing mechanical drawings, including Built to Print items.
- Experience designing mechanical mounting fixtures
Principal Engineer Mechanical
- 5 Years with Bachelors in Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a position-relevant Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematical (STEM) Area; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD.
- Requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret or Top Secret Clearance within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet business needs.
- Experience creating drawings using Siemens NX
- Experience formally releasing mechanical drawings, including Built to Print items.
- Experience designing mechanical mounting fixtures
These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:
- Bachelors Degree or higher in a STEM related field of study
- US Citizenship with an Active Secret Clearance or higher (awarded within the past 6 years) with the ability to receive a Special Access Program (SAP) certification.
- Experience creating, organizing, and maintaining a drawing tree
- Experience with fluid systems plumbing design
- Systems Engineering / Life Cycle Design Experience starting with requirements
- SEIT / Verification Experience
- Excellent communication and organizational skills; strong interpersonal and analytic skills
- Works well in a team environment
