Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a motivated Principal Electronics Engineer or Sr. Principal Electronics Engineer to join a dedicated, highly engaged field engineering team in southern California.
What You’ll Get To Do:
You will have the opportunity to support a variety of unique electrical, electronic and electromechanical systems designed for maritime applications. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, a team player, and possess the ability to research and effectively resolve technical issues both independently and as part of a large multi-disciplined team. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as interpersonal skills in order to coordinate with a variety of disciplines are also essential. This position requires the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt quickly to frequently changing requirements. The candidate will be required to effectively and efficiently work at offsite locations that may require travel.

The ideal candidate brings solid engineering design skills along with a multi-disciplined background, a hands-on work ethic, excellent communication skills, a good understanding of engineering fundamentals, and a hands-on approach to troubleshooting complex electronic systems. This opportunity involves a broad spectrum of tasking that will rely heavily on the candidate's existing skills and experience. Deploying at sea with customer personnel is not a requirement, but many of our engineers choose to do so because it allows them to experience and evaluate the real-world performance of the systems they have designed and built. Although this is primarily an electrical/electronics engineering position, being at a field site offers involvement in almost every aspect of product design and program support.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Understanding design to cost, scope, and schedule
- Requirements definition
- Designing custom circuits and electronic assemblies
- Generating formal engineering documentation (drawings, procedures, etc.)
- Manufacturing support during the hardware build process
- Hands-on testing, system integration and troubleshooting
- Customer training on Operation of equipment and systems (deployed at sea)
- Researches, designs, develops, and tests a variety of electronic equipment and system
- Applies extensive technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines
- Able to communicate effectively and clearly present technical approaches and findings
- Perform with appropriate oversight needed to complete assignments
- Handle complex technical issues and resolve them in new and innovative ways

Basic Qualifications for Principal Electronics Engineer
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of related experience including electrical or electronics design, testing and troubleshooting (3 years with a MS degree or 0 years with a PhD)
- Must have an active Top Secret Clearance with the ability to obtain SCI and Special Program Access (SAP) prior to starting.
- The ability to read and interpret specifications, schematics and block diagrams
- Analog and Digital Circuit Design and Analysis ability and experience
- Experience with test & measurement equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes and spectrum analyzers)
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electronic circuits (e.g., analog or high-voltage circuitry)
Basic Qualifications for Sr. Principal Electronics Engineer
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) and a minimum of 9 years of related experience including electrical or electronics design, testing and troubleshooting (7 years with a technical MS degree or 4 years with a PhD)
- Must have an active Top Secret clearance with the ability to obtain SCI and Special Program Access (SAP) prior to starting.
- The ability to read and interpret specifications, schematics and block diagrams
- Analog and Digital Circuit Design and Analysis ability and experience
- Experience with test & measurement equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes and spectrum analyzers)
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electronic circuits (e.g., analog or high-voltage circuitry)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two (2) or more years of work experiences with DOD related products
- Proficiency with PSpice, LTspice and similar tools for circuit modeling and simulation
- Experience with Mentor Graphics Designer/Expedition, CADSTAR or similar tools for circuit card design and layout
- Familiarity with the National Electric Code (NEC)
- Power electronics design experience
- Familiar with power supply EMI/EMC filtering and design
- Magnetic component design experience
- Experience with battery charging and monitoring
- Experience with mixed signal circuits and low noise data acquisition techniques
- Mix of hardware and software skills
- Experience with marine systems, SONAR and other sensors
- Effective verbal and written communication
