Northrop Grumman's Aeronautics System's West Avionics organization has an opening for a Sr Principal Communications Hardware Engineer. The position is located in Palmdale, California.
Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is seeking a successful candidate to fill a Hardware Engineering role within the Communications and Payloads organization. You will be responsible for working within an integrated product team (IPT) structure to perform engineering capture, build, integration, test and maintenance of communications hardware in laboratory and field settings. This includes the specification and usage of specialized test and support equipment.
Your responsibilities will include (but not limited to) the following:
Design of rack-based communication, test, support equipment, and cabling to meet system requirements, to include:
Perform electrical and mechanical (signal, power & thermal) analysis at the rack level
Generation of engineering drawings in accordance with ASME and IEEE standards, including rack assembly drawings, interconnect wiring diagrams and custom cable assemblies
Specification of rack cabling (RF, optical, 1553, power) and cooling systems
Production and fielding of hardware, to include:
Installation of communication, test and support equipment in lab and field environments
Providing lab and site integration, test, and maintenance support
Participate in troubleshooting systems to resolve complex issues, interact and coordinate with responsible communications engineers responsible for sustaining communication sub-systems
Management of production environment and engineering teams:
Contribute to improvement of processes and designs for current and future efforts
Support Project Engineer functions to include management of budget, cost, and schedule
Provide customer support and coordination
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline (STEM) from an accredited university with 9 years of experience or Master’s Degree in STEM with 7 years of experience or a PhD with 4 years of experience
Active DoD Top Secret clearance with investigation date within the last 5 years and ability to obtain and maintain access to Special Programs (SAP)
Ability to travel up to 25%
Must be physically able to move up to 50 lbs
Must have color vision to identify cables and wires
Must have working knowledge of governing and industry standards to include MIL-STD-1553, MIL-STD-1760, MIL-STD-100G, and ASME Y14.100
Must have experience with drawing and release tools – (CATIA V5, Visio, Teamcenter Enterprise)
Preferred Qualifications:
Must have experience with Earned Value Management to include management of tasking through and Integrated Master Schedule
Must have high attention to detail and emphasis on first time quality
Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills with an aptitude to learn new material quickly
Must be a self-directed technical performer with demonstrated experience leading multi-disciplinary technical trades, and ability to develop and execute to a strategy
Working knowledge of various communication protocols including Ethernet, 1553 bus systems and FibreChannel
Working knowledge of communication engineering theory and RF systems
Experience with production of complex systems
