Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems – Propulsion Division is currently seeking an experienced Staff Structural Engineer to fill a Subject Matter Expert position for the Insulated Composite Case Design and Analysis team at our Promontory or Bacchus, UT offices.
The Composite Case Analysis SME is the archetype of technical excellence and is a technical expert in the design and analysis of composite structures with an emphasis on the analysis methods and techniques used for a composite case structure. The SME is the face of the discipline. Position will be approximately 70% direct work.
Experience Requirements:
12 years minimum of experience in composite structural design and analysis engineering or related field
5 years minimum working in the Composite Case design and analysis group
Direct experience analyzing complex composite and metallic structures using classic closed form methods and finite element analysis methods
Strong technical knowledge in the fundamental mechanics of composite materials, design, analysis, testing and fabrication
Experience developing non-linear composite material properties using sub-scale test results and micro-mechanics approach
Skills and Qualifications:
Must have strong technical understanding of classical closed form and FE analysis methods, specifically using ABAQUS pre and post solver software
Must have expert level understanding of in-house codes such as FEMBuilder and CaseBuilder software
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the capability to address high levels of management, detail oriented design and analysis engineers, and both internal and external customers
Excellent time management and organizational skills
Demonstrated critical problem solving skills with experience in several investigation teams or other similar issue resolution teams
Strong understanding of past 25 years of composite case design and analysis methods
Responsibilities:
Perform peer reviews of closed form calculations, FE models, analysis results and documentation for the insulated composite case group
Ensure analysis methods and techniques used within the insulated composite case group are consistent across all programs and meet company standards
Own the composite case analysis command media – checklist, standards, lessons learned, etc.
Establish and maintain specific analysis training aids for insulated composite case group
Ensure analysis techniques and methods improve over time to keep up with industry analytical tool advancements
Coordinate in-house code improvements with the Engineering Tools group
Mentor early career employees with an emphasis on composite case structural analysis
Perform structural analysis for composite structures including structural modeling/simulation including strength, buckling, damage tolerance, durability/fatigue and delaminations
Help on investigations, studies and R&D projects
Education/Certifications:
BS degree in Mechanical Engineering with 14 years of applicable experience or MS with 12 years of applicable experience
