Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems – Propulsion Division currently seeking an experienced Sr. Principal Structural Engineer to fill a Technical Lead position for the Insulated Composite Case Design and Analysis team at our Promontory or Bacchus, UT offices.
Role description & Responsibilities:
The Technical Lead position is responsible for:
Contributing to major design efforts and coordinate technical efforts based on knowledge and experience
Aiding the development for an insulated composite rocket motor case and related structures by design and analysis
Support production of insulated composite cases with prompt technically sound MRB dispositions
Create designs for future rocket motor insulated case products using advanced in-house codes and finite element analysis techniques
Develop and maintain engineering documentation products (drawings, specifications, design and analysis reports, test plans, test reports, etc.)
Oversee and plan testing for development and qualification of flight hardware products
Job Duties:
Provide program support for all insulated composite case related issues for the IPT, insulated case VSET and other relevant VSETs
Design and update rocket motor insulated cases using Northrop Grumman proprietary computer codes
Design and update associated components and structures, both composite, metallic and internal insulation to achieve lowest cost from design and lean manufacturing principles
Perform 2D and 3D structural analysis for the design of flight hardware and test articles using Siemens NX CAD software and ABAQUS/CAE tools
Create and/or revise engineering drawings and specifications to define design for hardware fabrication, support fabrication efforts, write test plans and reports, oversee testing, analyze test data and make revisions to designs based on results
Develop and present documentation for project related briefings including design reviews to be given to internal and external customers
Engage with multi-discipline team and functions to improve internal insulation designs and methods
Experience Requirements:
Minimum Experience: BS mechanical (or equivalent) engineering degree with 9 years experience or MS with 7 years experience
Experience Preferred:
Knowledgeable of Composite Structures Design, Analysis and Optimization
Knowledgeable of internal insulation design, fabrication and inspection techniques
Knowledgeable of Siemens NX, ABAQUS/CAE and ABAQUS solver
Experience with composite manufacturing processes such as filament winding, tape and hand layup
Knowledgeable with post fire insulation performance data from full scale rocket motor tests
Skills & Qualifications:
Broad understanding of the materials used in an insulated composite case (composite fibers, resins, insulative and structural rubbers, adhesives, metals, fasteners, etc.
Strong skills using Classical Lamination Theory and related tools for design as well as optimization techniques for minimum mass composite structures.
Strong skills in CAD and Finite Element Analysis with the ability to quickly learn new design code and FEA tools.
GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis and drawing preparation skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Excellent time management and organizational skills.
Detail oriented but able to understand the big picture.
