NG- Military Internship Program Description:

The Northrop Grumman Military Internship Program (NG-MIP) is an approved SkillBridge Program under Dept. of Defense Instruction 1322.29 .The NG-MIP program is an opportunity for transitioning service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through an individual internship during their last 6 months of service, for up to 180 days. The Northrop Grumman Military internship Program is open to all ranks and experience levels. SkillBridge participants are not eligible for compensation from Northrop Grumman, as they continue to receive military compensation and benefits as active-duty service members.
Responsibilities for this internship position are:
Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC) has developed the Northrop Grumman – Military Internship Program (DoD SkillBridge) utilizing the DoDI guidance for SkillBridge. During this program the service member will be on-site at his or her host company performing an individual internship in an entry to mid-level career type role. The service member will be on the job training supporting a work schedule equivalent to 40hrs per week. Outlined below are the Goals, Objectives, and Outcomes for the program.
Goals – Provide transitioning service members fellowship-style job skills training during the last portion(s) of their military commitment. This program is specifically designed to offer internships that result in the potential to transition to a full-time opportunity as the conclusion of the training. Interns will serve as a pipeline for high-speed, motivated military candidates into NGC.
Objectives - Service Members who complete the Intern program will be highly-trained, capable, future employees that align to the specific needs of the organization and are prepared to meet the NG mission “Defining Possible” on Day 1. This program provides a comprehensive internship experience including professional development, networking with leadership, and training specifically focused on NG leadership principles, company history, customer/stakeholder engagement, product and service overview, and core job responsibilities.

DoD SkillBridge Eligibility:
- Has served at least 180 days on active duty
- Is within 12 months of separation or retirement
- Will receive an honorable discharge
- Has taken any service TAPS/TGPS
- Has attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months
- Received Unit Commander (first O-4/Field Grade commander in chain of command) written authorization and approval to participate in DoD SkillBridge Program prior to start of internship.
Northrop Grumman Corporation is offering a challenging and rewarding career as a DoD Skillbridge Mechanical Engineer/Principal Mechanical Engineer within the Mission Systems Sector located at the Rolling Meadows - Illinois facility.
This position will support the development, build, and test validation of ruggedized electronic equipment for military applications. The candidate will work within the Hardware Engineering organization. The team is seeking a Mechanical engineer to apply and expand their experience in hardware design, analysis, documentation, and integration of electro-mechanical systems. Strong communication skills are required for success in all phases of the role. The engineer will serve on and typically lead engineering teams, interfacing heavily with other mechanical engineers and analysts, as well as engineers from related disciplines, program management, and customers/stakeholders. The engineer is expected to manage schedule and budget for assigned projects, with the ability to identify and communicate any issues that may impact these goals. The engineer will be responsible for solving challenging technical problems with innovative solutions that meet performance, cost, and schedule requirements. This expertise will be applied at all phases of the product life cycle, including requirements analysis, concept definition, detailed design, production, and environmental test. The engineer will be expected to present the team’s design solutions and analysis during internal and external design reviews, document the design through drawing generation and release, provide factory and supplier support, and support change incorporations.
The Mechanical/Principal Mechanical engineer will be expected to contribute to the overall knowledge base and skill level of the organization via coaching, knowledge transfer, and process improvement activities.
*This position may be filled at either a Mechanical Engineer or Principal Mechanical Engineer level based on the qualifications below.*
Basic Qualifications for Mechanical Engineer:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with a minimum of 2 years of experience in electronics packaging or a Master’s degree.
- Experience with hardware development and electro-mechanical packaging, including at least one of the following subjects: thermal analysis, structural analysis, microelectronics design, opto-mechanical design, environmental testing
- Proficiency with 3D CAD Tools (Siemens NX is preferred) and product data management tools
- Demonstrated capability or experience in leading small to moderately sized teams during the product development process
- Demonstrated application of innovative solutions to complex problems that arise within the design, development, and production phases
- Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills including experience presenting at design reviews and customer/stakeholder briefings
- U. S. citizen and must have Active Secret Clearance to start.
Basic Qualifications for Principal Mechanical Engineer:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with a minimum of 5 years of experience in electronics packaging or a Master’s degree with 3 years of experience in electronics packaging.
- Extensive experience with hardware development and electro-mechanical packaging, including at least one of the following subjects: thermal analysis, structural analysis, microelectronics design, opto-mechanical design, environmental testing
- Proficiency with 3D CAD Tools (Siemens NX is preferred) and product data management tools
- Demonstrated leadership of small to moderately sized teams during the product development process including the review of technical work products
- Demonstrated application of innovative solutions to complex problems that arise within the design, development, and production phases
- Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills including experience presenting at design reviews and customer/stakeholder briefings
- Displayed ability to exercise latitude in determining most appropriate technical approach of assignments
- U. S. citizen and must have Active Secret Clearance to start.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master of Science degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
- Expertise with ANSYS and/or other tools used for design analysis
- Familiarity with opto-mechanical engineering
- Working knowledge of military and commercial process specifications
- Proficiency in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
- Demonstrated success leading others within an integrated product team (IPT), supporting the development of junior engineers and cross functional collaboration for overall project success
- Experience with project management metrics, including earned value management, to monitor and manage engineering budget and schedule requirements
- Experience in design, manufacturing, and integration of electronic assemblies including appropriate material selections and use of off the shelf components
- Experience contributing to technical and cost proposal development
- Leadership in process improvement or knowledge transfer (i.e. publication) activities.
