Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Launch and Missile Defense Systems has an exciting career opportunity for a Principal Software Engineer – Infrastructure Automation Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located out of Colorado Springs, CO.
Position Overview:
The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program integrates the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that enables the U.S. president, secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, to see the battle develop collectively, and to dynamically manage designated networked sensors and weapons systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives.
C2BMC supports a layered missile defense capability that enables an optimized response to threats of all ranges in all phases of flight. C2BMC is the force multiplier globally and regionally. Networks integrate and synchronize autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations to optimize performance. C2BMC is integral to all system ground and flight tests, which verify and exercise all current and future missile defense system capabilities.
Essential Functions:
- Turn existing IT infrastructure into an automated system.
- Conduct system generation from bare metal, updates, testing, and deployment of configuration changes using CI/CD tools.
- Performs assignments in technical/engineering organizations.
- Learn the C2BMC System and its different technologies.
- Develop products to meet requirements.
- Meet deadlines and commitments as needed to support program milestones.
Basic Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline preferred from an accredited university and 5 years of related experience, or a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years experience, or a PhD and 0 years of experience, or 9 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
- Must possess a DoD 8570 certification at IAT Level II or higher (Security+, GSEC, SCNP, SSCP, CISSP, CISA, GSE, SCNA)
- Previous experience should include some form of IT Infrastructure automation, working with the technologies listed in the technical skills area, and examples of troubleshooting difficult IT problems.
- Experience creating new automation scripts for deploying, monitoring, baselining, and scanning IT.
- Experience building automation pipelines and ideally has worked in a DoD environment.
- Experience with scripting/programming languages such as JavaScript, Python, and PowerShell
- In-depth knowledge of orchestration tools such as Ansible, Chef, and Puppet.
- Good understanding of virtualization platforms such as VMWare, Virtual Box, and Hyper-V
- Good understanding of network infrastructure such as Routers, Switches, Firewalls, and other infrastructure such as servers and workstations.
- Must know Gitlab, APIs, and IDEs.
- Ability and willingness to travel locally up-to 30% to support business needs.
- Applicants must have a current active in-scope U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance which is required to start.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Software development and troubleshooting in a team environment.
- Agile development experience
- Full software development lifecycle experience
- Current active in-scope Top Secret/SCI (TS/SCI) security clearance.
