Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Propulsions Division is currently looking for a Principal/Sr. Principal HPC Systems/Applications Engineer with experience in modeling and simulation and High-Performance Computing (HPC) to manage and develop our Promontory, UT based HPC systems, applications, and services.
Position Responsibilities:
This position oversees the vision, development, operation, and administration of HPC systems and services, which are used by more than 20 different Northrop Grumman business units spanning the Space, Defense and Aeronautics sectors at NG. The position reports to the Science & Engineering organization at Propulsion Systems and coordinates closely with the corporate IT organization and HPC council.
Job Duties:
Management and direction for support activities which includes system administration, software development, installation and users administration, implementing system use guidelines and resource scheduling policies
Ensures availability of adequate HPC capacity and support services for multiple research, development, and production programs across NG
Promotes new and existing uses of HPC applications and technologies, including CFD, FEA, Computation Chemistry, Design Optimization, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence
Provides day to day support (technical/non-technical) and administration of HPC services, including user training, problem resolution, and priorities management
Proactive assessment of capacity and service needs, including evaluating and implementing new technology, processes, and systems
Develops rationale for changes/upgrades and provide annual budget input to business and IT leadership
Chairs the NG HPC Steering Committee which oversees the service and makes decisions regarding system and policy changes
Manages hardware/software supplier relationships to maximize business value for NG
Continual liaison with various internal functional groups (IT, supply chain, InfoSec, IT leadership, facilities maintenance and engineering) to ensure quality of service, and comply with NG standards and processes
Participation in Northrop Grumman HPC Council and technical teams for technical interchange, standard processes, addressing common issues, evaluate new and emerging needs including cloud HPC and AI
Experience Requirements:
5+ years using mathematical modeling and computer simulation methods such as finite element analysis (FEA) or computational fluid dynamics (CFD), in the areas of product design and research
Familiarity with HPC technology – Linux clusters, high performance storage, processors, high speed network interconnects, job schedulers
Linux/Python scripting and programming knowledge desired
Skills
Strong skills in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel
Fundamental knowledge of Unix/Linux commands and operating systems
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Project management and organizational skills
Competencies for Success:
Familiarity with numerical methods for solving systems of equations on a digital computer (Ex. FEA, CFD, Heat Transfer)
People skills - essential for this position as it involves project management activities, chairing the HPC Steering Committee, interaction and involvement with other NG HPC teams and corporate IT groups, facilities and supply chain organizations, hardware/software suppliers, engineering and program managers
Problem solving ability and conflicting program priorities arise for HPC capacity.
Linux scripting, Python, XML knowledge
Educational Requirements:
BS degree in Engineering or Science with 5 years’ experience or MS with 3 years’ experience (Principal HPC Systems Engineer)
Position can be filled one level higher, 9 years with BS, 7 with a MS or 5 with a Ph.D. (Sr Principal HPC Systems Engineer)
