Principal Systems Engineer (Safety; Secret Clearance Required; Redondo Beach, CA)

Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems (NGAS) has an opening for a Principal Systems Safety Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals within our Systems Engineering organization.  This position is located in Redondo Beach, CA. 

The System Safety Engineer will report to the lead System Safety Engineer developing key range safety deliverables, and supporting system safety activities including ground safety, range safety and flight safety throughout a program's life cycle.  The System Safety Engineering deliverables are the only documents that provide a complete, true system description of the components, systems, air vehicle and mission design, and as such require a high level of understanding of the entire design. The System Safety Engineering effort includes interacting as part of a multi-disciplined engineering team to develop the air system architecture and constituent elements for new and existing flight programs, as well as new business concepts and proposals.

Essential Functions Include:

• defining, implementing and verifying System Safety requirements to ensure that the inherent risks are mitigated
• applying the systems engineering process to define and verify launch vehicle and ground support equipment requirements to ensure safe operations and conduct system safety analyses for a safe and robust system
• developing safety documents to support customer and test/operational range requirements and assist with defining, tracking, and gathering safety requirements verification artifacts.
• reviewing product systems, associated support equipment and facilities, and functional specifications and operations
• establishing safety requirements for assigned systems
• independently analyzing and recommending safety criteria in system design, equipment and procedures to control or eliminate hazards
• evaluating the interrelationship of system safety requirements and other aspects of concept design and development requirements to ensure the most cost-effective program

Basic Qualifications:

• Must have a Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline and 5 years of related professional/military experience in Systems Engineering, or an M.S. in a STEM discipline and 3experience, or a PHD in a STEM discipline and 0 years of related professional/military experience
• Must have an active DoD Secret (or higher) clearance (with a background investigation within the past 6 years or enrolled into Continuous Evaluation)
• Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance prior to the commencement of employment
• System Engineering background with System Safety experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with risk assessments.
• Experience in air vehicle system integration, testing and evaluation.
• Experience in presenting in front of customers and DoD personnel.
• Experience in development and maintenance of requirements control documents and related processes.
• Experience with Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) and CAMEO
• Experience performing Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Health Hazard Analysis (HHA), Environmental Hazard Analysis (EHA), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), System Hazard Analysis (SHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and support incorporating updates into the existing Hazard Tracking System (HTS) records.
• Experience with MIL-STD-882E
• Knowledge of MIL-STD-516 Air Worthiness Criteria, Human Systems Integration and SAE 6906
• Demonstrated command of English language and good communication skills.
• Demonstrated strict attention to detail and an eye for continuous improvement
