Reporting to the EHS Manager, we are seeking an EHS Specialist responsible for providing functional specialist guidance, assistance and coordination, in the development and implementation of EH&S related matters, ensuring EHS management systems compliance is met.

This role is located in Fairbairn, Canberra

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and promote the NGA - TS EHS Management System.

  • Consult with site management and all functional organizations to provide guidance on EH&S policy and procedure, objectives, standards, and legal requirements.

  • Review and interpret existing and proposed EHS regulations to determine applicability and impact business operations and assist with implementation of the SPA Program to comply.

  • Participate in program management meetings where EH&S input is required.

  • Provide support and guidance to Program management in maintaining the business EH&S Risk and Impacts Registers.

  • Support the EHS responsibilities of all department managers by assisting in the identification of hazards and the implementation of risk controls.

  • Provide specialist support to department managers and workers for the development and implementation of Safe Work Procedures where required.

  • Maintain the incident management system with reporting, investigation and follow up.

  • Provide specialist input for facilities matters where applicable, including but not limited to, occupation of new facilities.

  • Provide support to end-users to ensure compliant hazardous chemicals practices including approving new chemicals, PPE evaluations and leading abatement activities (Not including CoA Haz Chem matters)

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum of BSB41412 Certificate IV in Work, Health & Safety

  • Experience in providing legislative advice and guidance to business and operations at all levels of workers and managers

  • Experience in implementing and maintaining best practice WHS and/or Environment management programs

  • Current demonstrable experience in Hazard Identification and Management

  • A high level of numeracy skills, attention to detail and analysis ability

  • Ability to maintain to meet and maintain corporate and Sector EHS Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to conduct meetings and prepare and present concise oral and written reports, briefings, updates and other documentation to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to solve complex problems by: actively seeking information and new ideas from a variety of sources; consistently looking for novel ways to solve problems; mastering unfamiliar information, tasks and situations quickly and effectively

  • Must be an Australian citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a Defence security clearance (Baseline)

Desired Qualifications & Experience

  • Ideally, BSB51312 Diploma of Work, Health and Safety, or willingness to work towards

  • Incident Investigation Training (ICAM or similar), with proven experience in leading incident investigations

  • 5+ years working in a similar or related field

  • A/S 4801/ A/S 14001 System Auditing Experience

  • Hazardous Chemical Knowledge

  • Chem Alert Training

  • Aircraft Chemical Technical Knowledge/Aviation knowledge

  • WHS Hazardous Chemical Legislation Knowledge (State & Commonwealth)

Note: As a Defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants must be Australian Citizens. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) are applicable, as such your nationality may be a factor in determining your suitability for this role.
