Northrop Grumman is seeking a Strategic Planner 2. This position will be located at our Aeronautics Systems Sector in Falls Church, VA. The qualified candidate will become part of Northrop Grumman's Strategy and Business Development organization and part of an integrated team supporting advanced weapon systems programs in the National Capital Region.

Essential Functions:

  • monitoring and assessing US defense strategy, force planning, and operational concepts
  • conducting analysis to support concept and strategy development, advocacy, and business development
  • supporting and executing wargames and campaign analysis
  • developing compelling advocacy briefings and papers
  • engaging with the broader defense strategy, policy, budgeting, and acquisition community

Basic Qualifications:

A candidate, regardless of age and hiring source, must meet ALL of the below criteria. The candidate must:

  • Be completing or has completed their Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Be majoring in or having majored in political science, international relations, strategic studies, military history, or a related field
  • Have an overall cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 or higher (unofficial academic transcripts must be provided at time of application by uploading the documents to your application or profile)
  • Understanding of the international security environment, familiarity with modern military capabilities and operations. 
  • Strong writing and communication skills are required (sample work products are requested), to include the ability to generate material for presentation to customers and senior executives. 
  • Basic data analysis skills in R or Python OR advanced data analysis skills in Excel
  • Moderate travel is required. 
  • Be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite) and Special Program Access within a reasonable time frame as determined by the business

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Have an overall cumulative GPA of 3.7/4.0 or higher
  • Previous internship/co-op or other work experience, leadership & teamwork capabilities, interpersonal communication skills, and activities (professional/community/extracurricular)
  • Advanced degree in political science, international relations, strategic studies, security studies, military history, or a related field. 
  • Several years’ experience in the defense strategy, policy, and/or budgeting community. 
  • Experience in wargaming either as a regular participant, facilitator, or designer.
  • Familiarity with military operational planning focused on high-end, peer-conflict.
  • Familiarity or expertise in foreign military threats and foreign military capabilities. 
  • Familiarity with military aviation, long-range strike systems, naval forces, advanced weapons, and nuclear strategy.
  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with a preference for GIS and OGC standards.
  • Intermediate programming skills in either Python or R and knowledge of interfacing with GIS data using these languages.
  • Quantitative skills and familiarity with operations research methodologies.

Salary Range: $74,900 USD - $112,300 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
