Engineering Technician – Mechanical Flight Support (Union – Space)

Under the direction of senior technicians and/or engineers, performs operations, assembly, and modification of mechanical systems supporting NASA GSFC satellite (flight) projects. Systems include components such as piping, tubing, valves, fittings, regulators, and other components, and typically deliver purified compressed gas (purge) to satellite instruments to maintain instrument cleanliness. Demonstrated mechanical skills required. Experience with metal fabrication, welding, pressurized systems, piping, vessels, or nondestructive testing is a plus. This position is junior-level and it is expected that significant on-the-job training will be provided.
Performs basic tasks and standard assignments, demonstrating developing competency. Is directed and coached by supervisor and more senior technicians. Performs duties in areas such as environmental test facility operations, mechanical maintenance, cleanroom operations, mechanical integration, and recertification of pressure vessel systems. Depending on area of assignment, assists senior technicians and engineers in: performing spacecraft environmental tests; repairing and maintaining equipment, facilities and systems; assembly, integration and handling of ground support equipment; testing and inspection of pressure vessels; or other duties associated with area of assignment.

Basic Qualifications:
HS diploma, must have a minimum of 3 years of experience commensurate with skill level required for position complexity

• Must be able to travel for extended periods of time in support of flight projects
• Ability to adapt to weekend and holiday support on short notice and extended hours as required
• Must be able to work with chemicals to develop clean process systems
• Must be able to work in proper weld and high pressure gas PPE
• Must be able to follow procedures, plans, techniques, designs, or layouts
• Must possesses demonstrated mechanical skills in a work environment
• High school education or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications:

• Specific knowledge and application of purge systems, pressure systems, and high pressure gas systems
• Experience working with cleanliness requirements in an aerospace, biomedical, or silicone manufacturing environment.
• Experience with metal assembly, fabrication, welding, or inspection; especially on pressurized systems
• Hands-on experience with satellite or space flight hardware
