Northrop Grumman Space Systems Sector is seeking a Senior Principal Systems Engineer to join the National Teams Systems Engineering team. These engineers support the development and verification of the national missile defense system, working closely with our customer the Missile Defense Agency (MDA). The position is located in Huntsville, AL

Position Overview

  • The selected engineer will conduct a wide variety of tasks developing, maintaining and integrating specialized mathematical-based modeling and simulation, as well as analyzing results of mathematic modeling to develop requirements for the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Missile Defense System in a model based systems engineering environment (MBSE) environment.
  • Modeling and simulation tasks drive end-to-end performance analysis of the Missile Defense System. Individual will also participate in the development, updating, and benchmarking/anchoring of M&S tools to support system analysis tasks.
  • Individual will conduct technical meetings with government and industry subject matter experts to analyze and formulate performance and functional requirements for system-of-system level specifications. 
  • The selected candidate should thrive in a fast-paced work environment with high expectations, multiple simultaneous projects, frequent leadership communication, significantly diverse assignments, collaborative/team settings across all organizational levels.
  • The selected candidate should have an understanding of radars and interceptors work and a proven history of software tool development and verification.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM discipline and 9 years of related experience, or a Masters’ Degree in a STEM discipline and 7 years of related experience or a PhD with 4 years’ experience
  • Active Secret clearance required to start
  • Strong technical background in radar function and performance, including tracking, discrimination techniques, and electronic attack/electronic protection techniques or in kill vehicle functionality and performance
  • Technical background in numerical modeling and simulation (M&S) using a high level programming language such as MATLAB, or similar language environment.  
  • Demonstrated knowledge of building and/or analyzing M&S for one-or-more missile defense-related system types:  EO/IR sensors, RF/Radar sensors, kill vehicles, missiles/interceptors, threats & countermeasures, target discrimination, or command and control (e.g., C3I, C4I, etc.).   
  • Possess software development experience with languages such as C++, C#, Python or Java. 
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills to develop and capture concepts in technical papers, presentations, and discussions.
  • Possess good oral and written communication skills and be capable of working in focused teams as an independent individual contributor, team member, and or lead role(s)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience modeling or simulating missile defense applications or similar domains (air combat, air defense, intercept of ballistic targets, intercept of non-ballistic targets, space vehicles, sub-orbital mechanics, etc.). 
  • Knowledge of ballistic and advanced threat systems ((e.g., aero-maneuvering, hypersonic, hyper-glide, countermeasures, etc.), a discriminator in selection. 
  • Modeling and analysis experience in aspects of the Ballistic missile defense system (e.g., Aegis Weapons Systems, Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD), Fire Control, C2BMC, BMDS sensors (EO/IR/RF), kill vehicles, interceptors, countermeasures, etc.).
  • Systems engineering experience with large, complex systems
  • Top Secret preferred

Salary Range: $114,300 USD - $171,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
