Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a Sr Principal Tool Engineer. This position will be located in Huntsville, AL and will support the GBSD Ground Base Strategic Deterrent program. Learn more about the GBSD program here.

What You’ll Get To Do:

The Sr. Principal Tool Engineer will be a motivated project lead and team player to implement and assist major tooling operations for the program. Candidate should have a background/experience/education in project management for small and large projects in the tooling and production field and coordinating major events that rely on strong planning, leadership and great communication. 

  • Assist with coordination of design and fabrication requirements for tools and fixtures with customers, both internal and external. Performing tolerance analysis to ensure form/fit/function. 

  • Conduct root cause failure investigations and implement associated corrective actions for production tooling. 

  • Develop & maintain the production line tooling statement of work. 

  • Assist Product Development Team with new product designs to ensure manufacturability, validate process/technology. Developing the tool usage instructions for all designed tools and equipment. 

  • Assist in managing all phases of project: design, document, fabricate, assemble and validate Core Competencies – Manufacturing aptitude - Knowledge of manufacturing, methods, fabrication processes (e.g., forming, stamping, machining, heat treatment, machines/machine tools, cutting tools and fluids, N/C programming, instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems). 

  • Ability to select the best method of producing parts, tools or assemblies. 

  • Computer Aided Design Tools - Advanced knowledge of computer aided design tools and systems (e.g., computer aided design / computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM), computer aided three dimensional interactive (NX). 

  • Able to manipulate data sets, (e.g., compare NX to measurement data, create stereo lithography files). Engineering Drawings & Specs - Basic ability to read, understand, and interpret engineering drawings and specifications. 

  • Functional level understanding of GD&T.

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.  

You’ll Bring These Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 9 years of experience OR Master's Degree in STEM with 7 years of experience OR PhD STEM with 4 years of experience in medium to large scale tooling fabrication and/or production fabrication including composites, metallic, coatings application, and/or production manufacturing operations

  • This position requires a current active DOD Secret clearance with an investigation date/periodic review within the last 5 years, and the ability to obtain a Program Special access within a reasonable period as determined by the company to meet its business needs.

  • Ability to understand/read/apply GD&T to a blueprint.

  • Experience working with NX.

  • Experience managing/coordinating technical projects (cost, schedule, and technical performance). 

These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:

  • Previous experience on high rate production military program.

  • Experience with Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM).

  • Experience with CPLM (Common Product Life Cycle Management) and MES (Manufacturing Execution System).

  • Knowledge of AS6500 requirements.

  • 5 years of experience in Catia or NX, 5 years of experience using ASME Y 14.5 in a design role.

  • 5 years of experience in Tool Design

  • Ability to communicate with various levels of leadership - Must be able to coordinate and resolve interpersonal and technical problems. Must work well either in a team environment or independently. Ability to work well with little to no supervision.


Salary Range: $103,900 USD - $155,900 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
