Northrop Grumman Space Systems is currently seeking an Principal/Sr. Principal Environmental Health & Safety Engineer to join our team at the Kennedy Space Center location.

Role description & Responsibilities:

Primary role is performance of Safety Engineering functions associated with fabrication and testing of materials/components used in the production of Aerospace hardware.  At these facilities the selected individual will be involved in a wide array of energetic material manufacturing processes including solid rocket manufacturing and functional testing.  A Secondary role is backup support to the Environmental Engineer.

Safety Engineering

  • Perform Risk Analysis and oversee Change Control for Hazardous processes including Energetic Mfg Operations, High Energy radiography, and other PSM covered processes.

  • Promote and maintain a high level of safety consciousness among employees

  • Perform Industrial Hygiene assessments for new chemicals (e.g., determine appropriate precautions and PPE requirements, etc.)

  • Work with internal and external customers including NASA and other Kennedy Space Center contractors) to ensure compliance to safety, health, and environmental federal, state, and local rules and regulations 

  • Perform worksite audits, inspections and evaluations on the operating floor

  • Arrange for monitoring for potential health hazards in the workplace including: Chemical, Particulate, Noise, Heat Stress, Ergonomic, etc.

  • Assist in design reviews for new and modified facilities, processes, equipment and tooling for safety-regulated compliance to help ensure the safety of the employees and the process

  • Assist in accident/incident investigation to help determine cause and corrective action as needed

  • Instill a safety culture in the workforce to ensure positive engagement with OP-E protocol

  • Assist in safety related training courses.  This may be preparation of web based training, or instructor led training

Environmental Engineering

  • Environmental Compliance and reporting duties including:

    • RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act)

    • SPCC (Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures

    • Tier II Emergency and Hazardous Chemicals

    • Toxic Release Inventory Program

    • HazWoper (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response)

    • DOT Shipping regulations

    • Clean Air and Clean Water Acts


  • Education: B.S. or MS in a Safety, Environmental Science or related STEM field and 5 years experience or 3 years with a MS

  • May be filled as an Engineer 4 with minimum 9 years’ experience with BS, 7 years with MS

  • Technical Skills:  Microsoft Office proficiency required (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Microsoft SharePoint is a plus         

  • Excellent mathematical, problem solving, written and verbal communications skills

  • Preferred: Extensive experience in both Industrial Safety and Environmental Reporting & Compliance fields

  • Ability to work occasional night or weekend shift

  • US Citizenship required

Salary Range: 87400 - 131200
Salary Range 2: 108400 - 162600

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
