Leads teams of AI engineers to define, develop, and deliver novel mathematical and statistical modeling, machine learning algorithms, and/or systems to tackle the challenges of prediction, optimization, and classification.  Applies novel machine learning algorithms to solve problems that would be intractable with conventional rules-based or procedural approaches.  Ensures the development of AI-enabled systems that meet stakeholders' mission needs and performance requirements. Works in problem spaces including large sets of structured and unstructured data using applications in pattern recognition, target detection and tracking, machine learning, deep learning, and decision systems, object classification, computer vision, natural language processing and/or autonomous systems. Develops or informs integration and test procedures; verification and validation approaches; and system operations, sustainment, and maintenance plans and procedures. Applies internal and external AI research results to designing systems and software.  Possesses familiarity with a wide variety of modern AI/ML algorithms and research.  Uses knowledge of AI/ML approaches to evaluate potential solutions to a given problem, direct research and trade studies, evaluate results, and develop requirements.  Explains complex mathematical, algorithmic, and machine learning topics to customers and laypersons. Identifies common failure modes for AI/ML algorithms and systems and designs fail safes to ameliorate them.  Follows best practices throughout the Engineering Life Cycle and ensures relevant standards are met.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS with 9+, MS with 7+, or Ph.D. with 4+ years of experience in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, or related technical fields.
  • Active secret clearance required.
  • Previous experience in People and Technical Leadership roles.
  • A demonstrated ability to perform innovative, applied research and develop sophisticated algorithms under computational or other resource constraints.
  • Experience with conventional software engineering principles, including code maintenance, coding standards, and version control.
  • Experience with algorithm implementations and software development in MATLAB, C, C++, Python, and/or Objective C.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven expertise in remote sensing, including active radar imaging and/or passive electro-optic and infrared imaging systems.
  • Proven experience with formulating innovative solutions to algorithm development, initiating and fostering client relationships, and executing projects in compliance with cost, schedule, and technical requirements.
  • Active TS/SCI Clearance.
  • Proven technical management experience preferably in either program IPT, R&D or Advanced Systems, technology, and/or functional environments.
  • Experience effectively leading diverse technical teams across multiple locations.
  • Experience as a technical leader and visionary.
  • Proven experience with open source computer vision and machine learning libraries (e.g., OpenCV, TensorFlow, and Caffe), Unix/Linux operating systems, and multi-threaded/parallel computing is of additional benefit.


Salary Range: $137,000 USD - $205,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
