The Emerging Capabilities Development group of Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking an independent and resourceful Plasma Etch Process Engineer for our Advanced Technology Lab (ATL) - located just outside of Baltimore, Maryland - where we design, manufacture, and test semiconductor products for internal and commercial production customers as well as emerging technology programs. Northrop Grumman’s ATL semiconductor foundry is a unique capability supporting a range of production microelectronic devices (Silicon, Gallium Arsenide, Gallium Nitride, Silicon Carbide) and providing leading edge technology development in superconducting electronics.

The Plasma Etch Process Engineer is responsible for production support, process improvement and development of various plasma etch processes at ATL. The individual will interface with multiple programs to solve complex technical development challenges and production needs. The candidate must be capable of working in a fast paced environment while developing solutions to multiple technology areas including superconducting electronics, Silicon, Silicon Carbide, Gallium Arsenide, and Gallium Nitride.

 Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Developing new plasma etch processes for new materials

  • Developing new plasma processes for emerging technologies in Compound Semiconductors

  • Responsible for the procurement and start-up of new dry etch process equipment and processes

  • Responsible for all aspects of sustaining plasma etch processes for Compound semiconductor manufacturing. This includes process qualifications, technician training and certification, and process safety

  • Supporting statistical process control (SPC) and continuous improvement efforts 

  • Establishing standard operating procedures and engaging the operations team to maintaining process documentation and performing all other related duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications for Principal Plasma Etch Process Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or closely related with at least 5 years technical related experience in semiconductor fabrication ( Masters w/ 3 years exp or PhD w/0 years exp).

  • Have understanding/knowledge of semiconductor plasma etch or other related semiconductor processing

  • Able to work independently with hands-on experience in operating tools, gathering, and analyzing data.

  • Candidate must possess good interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, problems solving skills with ability to work with a diverse group of people including engineers, technicians, and management

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance

Basic Qualifications for Senior Principal Plasma Etch Process Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or closely related with at least 9 years technical related experience in semiconductor fabrication ( Masters w/ 7 years exp or PhD w/4 years exp).

  • Have understanding/knowledge of semiconductor plasma etch or other related semiconductor processing

  • Able to work independently with hands-on experience in operating tools, gathering, and analyzing data.

  • Candidate must possess good interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, problems solving skills with ability to work with a diverse group of people including engineers, technicians, and management

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Process Development experience in plasma etch

  • Experience in Compound Semiconductors will be highly desired.

  • Experience in transition Processes to Production Environment.

  • Previous experience in wet processing such as resist strip and post-ash cleaning is desirable.

  • User of various software packages commonly found in Semiconductor Wafer Fabs – EMS Systems (FactoryWorks or alike systems), statistical analysis tools – SPACE, JMP, Mintab,….. etc.

  • Active Secret Clearance


Salary Range: $96,900 USD - $145,300 USD
Salary Range 2: $120,000 USD - $180,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
