Northrop Grumman Space Components Business Unit designs, manufactures and operates small and medium-class spacecraft for communications, imaging, scientific, exploration and national security space applications. The Group is leading supplier of space components that power and enable satellites of all classes, provides technical engineering services to government agencies and laboratories, and is developing exciting new satellite servicing and advanced space flight technologies.

The Manager, Tool Engineering 2 will provide both programmatic and technical tooling leadership to the respective Value Stream and will have responsibility for safety, quality, schedule, and cost operational and technical execution. The role will lead the Tool Engineering team for their Value Stream and work closely with program leadership, the manufacturing and testing teams, technical leaders, and functional subject matter experts within the Space Components Business unit. This position is expected to routinely perform tool design tasks in support of programs in conjunction with leadership roles and responsibilities. Leader will report to the Tool Engineering Functional Manager.

This position will be located in either San Diego, CA or Magna, UT.

Roles and Responsibilities:
Leadership Roles and Responsibilities:

• Design authority for value stream - Subject matter expert on metallic and composite tooling design and analysis for manufacturing, GSE, shipping containers, and all test tooling (static, dynamic, thermal). Owns design for manufacturability of tooling. Ensures safety focus and human factors considerations.
• Manage tool design resources in collaboration with tool design manager - Escalation, assignments, employee reviews, employee development, DLY management, hiring, recruiting, and verification of work completeness and accuracy
• Own program performance - SQDEC Daily Management. Escalation of technical, safety, schedule, and financial issues. Lead and/or support peer reviews.
• Program execution and support of program requirements - Ensure technical compliance. Manages risk assessment and management across programs in value stream. Responsible for approval and sign off of all drawings in product value stream ensuring adherence to standards. Coordinates accurate tooling plan through coordination with product design, product analysis, manufacturing engineering, and test engineering groups to meet end item requirements.
• Supports the fabrication/procurement of tooling and associated hardware - Create purchase requisitions and internal requests. Support suppliers on technical issues. Supports handoff to internal customers.
• Execute value stream lessons learned, best practices, and continuous improvement implementations
• Provide BOE in Support of Proposals

Detailed Tool Design Roles and Responsibilities:

• Interact with development teams (teams include product Design, product Analysis, Quality, Materials, and Manufacturing) to create and verify creative design solutions that meet all requirements (safety, technical, schedule, cost)
• Support tooling design from preliminary through detailed design, drawing release, manufacturing, and tool use.
• Designs molds, assembly fixtures, handling fixtures, drill jigs, machining fixtures, test fixtures, inspection fixtures, and other tooling required for manufacturing, handling and test.
• Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, strength, contractual specification requirements, and cost.
• Utilizes computer-aided design (CAD) equipment, completes preliminary analysis for material sizing, and makes layouts, sketches and notes necessary to present design proposals and/or concepts and designs to internal and external customers.
• Creates and checks drawings of complex assemblies and details parts of tooling designs.
• Works with internal and external customers and suppliers to support the design and procurement process.

Basic Qualifications:

• BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering and 9 years’ related experience required
• MS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering and 7 years’ related experience preferred
• Demonstrated leadership experience: Experience managing an engineering team strongly preferred
• Aerospace experience with product definition (Specifications, SOW's, Drawings) and design and verification processes is required for this position.
• Proficiency in NX, TeamCenter
• Knowledge of composite materials manufacturing processes
• Previous experience in aerospace manufacturing facility

• Ability to obtain a security clearance
• Able to work seated/standing at a desk in five hour increments.
• Requires repetitive arm, hand, and wrist movements in five hour increments.
• Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.

Salary Range: $112,700 USD - $195,700 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
