The Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems Software Directorate has an opening for a Software Engineering Manager 2 to join our team of highly qualified and diverse individuals. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, California.

Candidate will be responsible for the functional management of approximately 12 software engineering personnel assigned to space programs. Duties include conducting performance assessments, staffing, employee development, communication meetings, disciplinary actions, compensation adjustments, training & educational oversight/ approval and other routine personnel issues. Position will be responsible for establishing common processes and practices in cooperation with colleague managers across the sector. Must have experience in the full lifecycle of complex software systems. The candidate will work closely with program-assigned systems engineering, software development, and management professionals to ensure that the software lifecycle is accomplished with high quality and efficiency. Candidates will develop and manage detailed budgets and schedules and make work assignments for indirect tasking.

All candidates must have a current and continuing full-time program assignment; this position is allocated for 20% of the successful candidate’s time, which fluctuates during the year due to business needs and the performance management cycle.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other applicable STEM discipline and 9 years of relevant experience, or Master’s Degree with 7 years of experience, or PhD with 4 years of experience

  • Proven leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the software development lifecycle

  • Demonstrated ability to build or maintain diverse/inclusive teams with engaged team members

  • Demonstrated mentoring skills, and excellent 2-way communication skills (upward and downward)

  • Knowledge and understanding of standard software engineering processes

  • Proven time management and organizational skills to prioritize across concurrent program and functional responsibilities

  • Active DoD Secret Clearance

    • Candidate must have, and be able to maintain, at least ONE of the following active U.S. Government security clearances:

    • Dept of Defense Secret level with a background investigation date within 10 years OR Dept of Energy L clearance with a background investigation date within 10 years


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other STEM discipline is preferred.

  • Prior experience in engineering functional management is a plus.

  • Experience in software control of hardware instrumentation is a plus.

  • Experience with multiple iterations of the complete lifecycle as a practitioner preferred.

  • Demonstrated coaching skills are a plus.

  • Previous experience leading a team of 5-12 employees with a record of on-time performance.

  • Previous experience in developing proposal inputs (task descriptions and basis of estimate)

  • Demonstrate exemplary professionalism and ability to maintain composure in stressful situations.

Salary Range: $140,536 USD - $210,804 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
