Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems Division (SSSD) is looking for a Principal Quality Engineer, to support the electronics inspection and quality engineering teams at our Manhattan Beach, CA location. 

Electronic Inspection & Test

Essential Functions:

  • Develops, modifies, applies and maintains quality evaluation and control systems and protocols for processing materials into partially finished or finished materials product.

  • Collaborates with engineering and manufacturing functions to ensure quality standards are in place and maintained. Devises and implements methods and procedures for inspecting, testing and evaluating the precision and accuracy of products and production equipment.

  • Designs and analyzes inspection and testing processes, mechanisms and equipment; conducts quality assurance tests; and performs statistical analysis to assess the cost of and determine the responsibility for, products or materials that do not meet required standards and specifications.

  • Perform production floor activities associated with quality, production, and test activities, while assisting in the corrective action CAB and Material Review Board (MRB) including data gathering and analysis.

  • Possess technical knowledge in specifications/standards, drawing interpretation, measurement and analysis methods, process and product assessments, and corrective action methodology

  • Support the Inspection Team by ensuring contractual quality requirements are flowed down to the cell, clarifying drawing and other build documentation questions

  • Possess the ability to apply technical standards, scientific principles, theories and concepts

  • Audits quality systems for deficiency identification and correction while collaborating with the compliance team. Ensures that corrective measures meet acceptable reliability standards and that documentation is compliant with requirements.

  • May specialize in the areas of design, incoming material, production control, product evaluation and reliability, inventory control and/or research and development as they apply to product or process quality.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) discipline with a minimum of 5 Years of related experience; OR a Masters degree with 3 years of experience; PHD with 0 years.

  • Experience with manufacturing processes, engineering drawings, assembly and/or testing.

  • Knowledge of ISO9001, AS9100, and/or internal/external audits.

  • Working knowledge of Material Review and Failure Review Boards, with various methods of root cause analysis (e.g., 5 -Why, Ishikawa, PFMEA, Process Maps, etc.)

  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain, at least ONE of the following active U.S. Government security clearances: Dept of Defense Secret level with a background investigation date within 10 years; OR Dept of Energy L clearance with a background investigation date within 10 years


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Must be able to travel as needed (up to 10% of the time)

  • Experience supporting Root Cause Corrective Action teams

  • Understanding of Continuous Improvement concepts, process and tools

  • Experience with Solumina, MES, SAP quality tools

  • Understanding of Continuous Improvement concepts, process and tools

  • Candidate must have, and be able to maintain, at least ONE of the following active U.S. Government security clearances: Dept of Defense Secret level with a background investigation date within 10 years; OR Dept of Energy L clearance with a background investigation date within 10 years


Salary Range: $92,200 USD - $138,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
