Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an exciting career opportunity for a Staff Engineer Airworthiness to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals; and to work on exciting new opportunities within the Airworthiness Directorate. This position will be located the Manned Aircraft Design Center of Excellence (COE) in Melbourne, FL.

General Responsibilities for a Staff Engineer Airworthiness:

Ability to develop basis of certification, determine methods of compliance, and compliance verification documentation for civil and military AW certification of air systems. Achieves the logical and systematic realization of customer airworthiness compliance (MIL-HDBK-516, NAVAIR Instruction 13034.1F, civil, and international standards) into system solutions to meet program objectives (e.g. flight releases, type certification, continued airworthiness, and operational or airspace integration). Reviews and coordinates with other Airworthiness Engineers, as well as with internal engineering disciplines at all levels of the air system to include: design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance, and disposal. Reviews functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation, interface definition, hardware, and software specifications for airworthiness compliance to the appropriate regulations, standards, and/or guidelines. Manages airworthiness activities throughout the development, sustainment, and disposal lifecycles.

Position Specific Functions

  • Work to ensure and report AW compliance, metrics, efficiencies, issues to leadership.
  • Work alongside AW LS team to develop and release AWLS procedures, models or manuals required to execute AWLS policy working with teams from each NGSC sector.
  • Work closely with the AWLS Lead to help review, assess and provide oversight for AW compliance of applicable civil and military airworthiness regulatory agencies, both domestic and international to all sectors.
  • Lead the sustainment of the defined reporting schema to the AW Leadership regarding the latest AW compliance status for target programs and the latest findings (issues, risks, exposure, incidents or accidents, etc.) for each sector.
  • Provide ongoing AWE support to each sector as required to collaborate in the verification of design and/or modifications of air systems HW and SW and ensure compliance with AW criteria established for the respective air system. This includes AW digital transformation efficiencies.
  • Execute independent AW audits / assessments for all sectors to evaluate air system configurations.
  • Execute on vaulting and managing all shared AW data properly in AW approved repositories for perpetuity.
  • Execute and sustain airworthiness policies, processes, and training for all sectors.
  • Performs technical airworthiness planning and verification support including development and negotiation of airworthiness plans, basis of certifications, means of compliance, and certification activities for complex total systems with IPT/REs as well as customer counterparts.
  • Review and coordination with other airworthiness engineers as well as internal engineering disciplines performed at all levels of total system to include: design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal.
  • Performs functional and process analyses, requirements allocation and definition studies to translate customer requirements into criteria and requirements.  Ensures the logical and systematic realization of customer airworthiness requirements into system solutions to meet program objectives (e.g. Flight releases, Type certification, continued airworthiness, and operation or airspace integration.
  • Interface with Office of Airworthiness, Program IPTs, Program Office, and Customer community as required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in STEM discipline with 14 years, or Masters with 12 years, or PhD with 9 years
  • Work experience on manned or unmanned aircraft systems with minimum 10 years professional experience, with at least 5 years in an assignment working Airworthiness (Military or Civil)
  • Active Secret Clearance, Ability to obtain and maintain Top Secret

Preferred Qualifications:

  • DoD and Civil Airworthiness Experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to work under general direction
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word and SharePoint
  • Military aircraft development or modification experience
  • Ability to initiate Airworthiness Certification process improvement initiatives
  • Design and Systems Engineering experience in one or more of the following areas: Structures, Flight Technology, Air Vehicle Subsystems, Avionics, Mission Payload Integration, System Safety, Flight Test
  • Familiarity of MIL-HDBK-516B Expanded and -516C
  • Familiarity with NAVAIR Instruction 13034.1F
  • Experience with one or more of the following: MIL-STDs-1797, 810, 1530, 3013, 882E, 1796
  • System Safety Risk Assessments (SSRA), program risks and hazard analyses
  • Experience with Agile methods of program execution

Salary Range: 134400 - 201600

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
