Northrop Grumman’s Defense Systems Division (NGDS) has an immediate need for a Director 2 of Business Development (BD) for our Advanced Weapons (AW) Business Unit in Northridge, California.

The Director of Business Development will be the senior business development leader for AW and will be responsible for all Business Acquisition processes and activities for the Business Unit.  This position will be required to work in Northridge, CA. Relocation assistance, while not guaranteed, may be available.

The successful candidate will be responsible for directing and managing business development and capture activities, supporting a rapidly growing $400-800M Business Unit through the development of a pipeline of quality opportunities, building strong customer intimacy, and supporting strategy development & business capture efforts.

The BD Director will be responsible for directing and managing key relationships and business development activities with the Navy, Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and multiple international/FMS customers.  This customer base requires agility in approach and strong communication skills.

The Director of Business Development will lead AW’s team of senior BD professionals and field representatives, while working in close partnership with existing program teams to protect current programs and grow future business opportunities.  The successful candidate will lead the Business Unit’s Business Acquisition Improvement Team, focused on implementation and continuous improvement of a disciplined Business Acquisition methodology and approach.   The successful candidate must be proactive and execution oriented.  He/she must be capable of broad, strategic thinking with respect to emerging customer needs, competitive positioning, and requisite capabilities, with the ability to guide the organization towards the strategic and tactical actions necessary to achieve Business Unit objectives.

The successful candidate will work in partnership with the Business Unit VP, Strategy Director, and Market Directors to develop and execute a discretionary investment plan aligned with Sector, Division, and Business Unit priorities. The position will be based in Northridge, CA with frequent travel, domestic and international, to meet with customers and industry partners.  Alternative locations will be considered but are not preferred.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Execution of Weapon Systems Strategy and Annual Operating Plan

  • Overall Business Acquisition Process lead for the AW Business Unit

  • Manage a team of BD Directors / Managers / Field Representatives / BD Operations, to include assignment of portfolios and areas of responsibility within the Business Unit portfolio.

  • Manages Business Strategy Team (BST) process to create, develop, and implement strategy

  • Establish and nurture mission and customer intimacy with warfighters as well as the supporting acquisition and sustainment communities

  • Identify and assess government (US and international partners) requirements, resources and acquisition plans/issues across multiple customers and analyze/communicate the information to AW personnel

  • Support the ongoing long range strategic planning process as well as the development of a robust opportunity pipeline.

  • Represent the Business Unit with key Division, Sector and Corporate pursuits, integrating the Business Unit’s vision, strategy, requirements shaping, business portfolio growth, investment planning, acquisition, and marketing plans/needs.

  • Interact with senior executives and key stakeholders across the company and the customer community. Must be a skilled communicator and presenter with the ability to garner buy-in, build trusting relationships, have excellent analytical and critical thinking skills and be able to function independently in high pressure environment dealing with competing priorities and short-turnaround situations.

  • Capture of awards consistent with Business Unit strategic plan and Annual Operating Plan

  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable interacting with individuals and diverse groups of people in business and social settings.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business or related field.

  • 10+ years of experience in Business Development / Defense Acquisition / Capture Management preferred.

  • US citizenship with current Secret clearance with ability to obtain a TS/SCI clearance (current/active TS/SCI preferred)

  • Broad relationship base with customers spanning the US and International Partner Defense Communities.

  • Knowledge of government budgeting and procurement processes and across all phases of the Business Acquisition Process (strategy, identification, qualification, capture, bid, and keep sold activities).

  • Experience in business marketing/coordination and submission of responsive proposals, effective defense contract negotiations, appropriate/applicable interpretation of defense contract terms and conditions, issue identification, risk mitigation and ensuring post-win customer satisfaction.

  • Familiar with the USG Foreign Military Sales (FMS) process and associated requirements for weapon exports to partner nations.

  • Ability to build and lead a business development team with a vision for success and capable of delegating responsibilities to the appropriate team members.

  • Proven skills as a respected team leader and winning new business.

  • Strong communication and influence management skills.


Salary Range: $216,200 USD - $324,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
