We are seeking a highly qualified and talented Systems Engineering Manager 3 located in Northridge, CA. This role will have both functional and program execution responsibilities. 

Reporting to the Director of Systems Engineering, the Systems Manager is responsible for overall management of the Engineering Specialties Department, covering System Safety, Cybersecurity, Reliability & Maintainability, and Logistics disciplines. In this role, the Systems Manager will support the implementation of strategic goals and objectives as applicable to these Specialty Engineering teams to support overall business objectives.  In addition, the Systems Manager will manage the day to day activities of the Specialties group. The role will ensure Specialty Engineering projects, initiatives, and processes are in conformance with the organization's established policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coach and develop staff by providing an environment that encourages ongoing professional growth. Ensure staff receive the appropriate training and skill development opportunities to be successful in their roles.
  • Collaborate with peer Department Managers and the Director to develop a strategy for organizational growth and retention.
  • Take lead responsibility for departmental performance. Develop plans to resolve issues, communicate the plan, and advise Senior Management on progress.
  • Recommend use of tools and technologies to ensure alignment to operational initiatives.
  • Act as a resource to the department staff by providing guidance, interpretation, training and key input regarding operating procedures and processes while fostering an environment of continuous improvement.
  • Actively participate in process improvement and process corrective action boards/groups.
  • Provide resources for proposals; participate in proposal writing as needed; develop, review, and approve Basis of Estimates (BOEs) as needed. 
  • Work with Engineering Management and Program Management to ensure all programs are adequately and appropriately staffed.
  • Review and approve weekly labor.
  • Establish annual employee goals and conduct periodic performance appraisals against the goals.
  • Address employee administrative issues.
  • Manage hiring activities, including creating job requisitions, recruiting, interviewing, and making hiring decisions in a group that is in the process of expanding.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 9 years of combined technical and management experience
  • Previous functional engineering management experience
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas:  System Safety, Cybersecurity, Reliability & Maintainability
  • Experience leading an engineering team or project
  • Experience in training/mentoring/coaching others
  • Good communication skills
  • Current/active Secret clearance or higher

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Proven leadership skills
  • Prior Functional Management Experience
  • Prior Engineering Management Experience
  • Experience / knowledge in missile system development
  • Experience in Earned Value Management System (EVMS)
  • A current DoD Secret clearance with a periodic reinvestigation or original adjudication date completed within the last 5 years


Salary Range: $171,000 USD - $256,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
