Northrop Grumman is currently seeking a Staff Propulsion Engineer in our Analysis Engineering department for our Palm Beach Gardens, Florida office.

Job Summary

Perform Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis of complex high-speed (supersonic and hypersonic) propulsion systems. Generally work from preliminary studies developed by higher graded engineers. Analyze requirements for aerodynamic systems, determine the technical principles involved, mathematically define the problem and compute the engineering characteristics consistent with the specifications, design needs, and requirements of the propulsion and vehicle systems. Release results as design data after review by panel of peer engineers. Develop original ideas and elaborate on preliminary design concepts. Evaluate completed design with supervisor and other technical groups and make modification necessary to achieve the most ideal design. Develop and coordinate the conduct of test programs required to evaluate design work.

Job Responsibilities

Demonstrates and applies advanced knowledge of high-speed (hypersonic) flow and advanced knowledge of high speed turbulence modeling in support of propulsion system design and verification activities. Detailed knowledge and extensive experience utilizing state of the art CFD pre-processors, solvers, and post-processing tools.  Develops extremely innovative and ingenious solutions to solve technically complex and challenging problems. Anticipates customer needs and finds innovative ways to provide for those needs. Provides viable, well-thought out suggestions that carry significant benefit to the department or the organization. Continuously finds new and better ways of performing job. Perform anomaly resolution and conduct special studies. Determine engineering tasks required for project planning and execution; Analyze project requirements and develop detailed planning, conceptual designs, and risk analysis. Assume leadership role as task manager, CAM, and/or analysis team lead as required. Review and approve analysis performed by team members. Interact with internal and external customers. Provide technical guidance and direction to engineering team in the design, test, production, and maintenance phases of a project. Develop and present materials for project related briefings including design reviews to be given to internal and external customers. Support new business capture strategies and prepare proposal material.

Basic Qualifications

  • Requires Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering & 14 years of experience or Master’s Degree in Mechanical/Aerospace & 12 years of experience or a PhD and 9 years of experience.
  • Active DoD Secret Security Clearance.
  • Demonstrated experience in CFD modeling, including compressible supersonic flows, high-speed combustion using Flamelet Generated Manifold models, and two-phase flows including Lagrangian Particle tracking.
  • Demonstrated experience/knowledge of fuel injection, including design of liquid/gas injectors, fuel drop size prediction/trajectory/evaporation, fuel system modeling to predict pressure losses, analyze fuel state, heat transfer, fuel vaporization and coking, experience with Ramjet fuel injectors.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using analysis tools such as STAR-CCM+®, CFD++®, and Pointwise®.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and present analytical results in both oral and written formats
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with internal and external client base
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Experience working in the aerospace and/or defense industry
  • Personal poise, demonstrated ability to prepare and present analytical results in both oral and written formats
  • Ability and willingness to travel 10%.

Preferred Skills:

  • PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering


Salary Range: 141400 - 212200

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
