Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Manufacturing Engineering Manager 2 to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position can be located in either El Segundo or Palmdale, CA. The manager will provide functional and technical leadership and direction across the Final Assembly and System Checkout thrust within AMT across multiple sites.  This position will also involve managing project development thru production transition, providing mentorship to team members, and managing project goals, objectives, schedules and cost while adhering to company policy.

As a member of the Advanced Manufacturing Technology development team, you will define, develop, implement, and transition new technology solutions to manufacturing to increase efficiency, reduce cost, and improve quality.  Manufacturing concept and process solutions for production applications cover advanced technologies including but not limited to composites fabrication, assembly, automation, inspection, direct part manufacturing, LO technologies, as well as digital capabilities.  The role requires incorporation of requirements into development plans and evaluation of performance of processes and tools to verify their efficiency.  In addition, you will identify and initiate corrective action of problems and deficiencies to ensure R&D contractual obligations (technical, schedule, and cost) are met and product quality is maintained.  In this role, you will provide guidance regarding design concepts, TRL/MRL maturity, and specification requirements to best utilize resources and manufacturing techniques, and ensure processes and procedures are in compliance with regulations. This role involves interfacing with internal and external customers, program offices, engineering disciplines, and executive management.  In addition, the role will require the ability to handle multiple projects concurrently in a dynamic/fast-paced work environment.  Budgeting and Project Management skills will be utilized to properly scope and execute assigned work and manage project efforts.

The Advanced Manufacturing Technology Manager:

  • Is responsible for leading a diverse and innovative team in identifying, analyzing, testing and integrating manufacturing processes and systems within a portfolio of current, and next generation products within the aeronautics sector.

  • Leadership characteristics and people engagement is of the upmost importance, with an ability to exhibit professionalism and foster a team working and learning environment.

  • Communication is paramount, with an ability to clearly define expectations and work thru complex interpersonal interactions.  Daily coordination across functions and levels, including direct reports, peers, and leadership are key to success.

  • Willingness to step-up and assume accountability when the perception of need exists. 

  • Must also have the ability to accomplish tasks in a positive manner while managing multiple projects at the same time with varying levels of technical maturity.

Approximately 8 - 10 direct reporting engineers are expected with the responsibility to manage and plan detailed schedules through multiple funding streams, and ensure projects are completed on schedule and within budget.

Requirements also include:

  • Providing engineering guidance regarding detailed designs and requirements for producible and affordable products and manufacturing techniques.

  • Responsible to attract and retain the best possible “athletes” for the stated requirements, ensure robust processes, and the development of future emerging leaders within the organization.

  • Ensure processes and procedures are in compliance with company and government regulations.

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills with a high level of internal and external engagement, acting as an advisor to individual contributors, senior management and customers on advanced technical research studies and applications.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 7 years’ engineering experience or Master’s Degree and 5 years’ engineering experience

  • A minimum of 1 year of leadership experience

  • This position requires a current and active DoD Secret level security clearance with periodic re-investigation, with the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business need

  • Ability to travel 20-35% of the time

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with production environments and Manufacturing Technology development processes such as DoD MRL/MRA.  Demonstrated history of technology implementation related to aviation and space products

  • EVMS experience and demonstrated successes in project management.  Experience as a Control Account Manager (CAM).

  • Demonstrated history leading and management of multi-functional teams. Candidate should possess experience in program management and previous experience with the development of manufacturing processes and technologies

  • Bachelor's Degree in a STEM field

  • Current Special Program Access

  • Demonstrated technical leadership skills, decisiveness, and ability to make sound technical judgments with limited information

  • Well-versed, skilled, and disciplined in system engineering processes

  • Experience with using Microsoft Office Products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, MS-Project, Visio)

  • Experience in generating requirements, specifically, the ability to turn vague customer needs or stakeholder inputs into requirements. 

  • Experience working with IPTs, other stakeholders, and various customers such as Air Force and Navy 

  • Proposal experience, and experience in other early phases of program lifecycle

  • Prior experience operating in a dynamic environment of increasing production schedules and high delivery rates

  • Siemens NX, TcE, CPLM, SAP, and Manufacturing Execution Systems

  • Experience in hardware/software integration of manufacturing systems

  • Experience with production assembly/fabrication

  • Technical Writing capability

  • Project / Program Management skills (proposal creation, scheduling, budget tracking)


Salary Range: $118,600 USD - $178,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
