Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems (NGAS) has an exciting career opportunity for a Principal Part, Material & Processes Standards Engineer (Mechanical Hardware) to join our team of qualified and diverse individuals. The team provides an efficient and effective common parts management capability to balance the needs for Program specialization, industry compliance and Enterprise optimization.  This position will be located in Palmdale, CA or El Segundo, CA with regional travel as needed.

Position Overview: 

The NGAS Parts, Materials and Processes (PM&P) Standards Team is seeking a Principal PM&P Engineer – Hardware Specialist, who will be responsible for supporting various NGAS programs.   The selected candidate will support technical Standards Engineering efforts to creatively find solutions for issues related to hardware systems including fastening systems, fluid fittings/systems, bearings, bushings, metallic brackets, drilling, mechanisms, and materials in addition to other mechanical part technologies. The Principal PM&P Standards Engineer will be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in a fluid system and/or fastening system, and will be collaborating with other Mechanical Standard SMEs, Electrical Standard SMEs to support near term responsibilities.  The candidate will support multiple AS Sector Programs and AS Sector business objectives in addition to being an advisor to management and customers on advanced technical studies and applications.  

The candidate will leverage project management to guide tasks through to completion on budget and schedule and utilize various communication styles to ensure communication is effective for the intended audience.  The candidate will be the technical representative for the Standards Team and be able to coordinate and collaborate with functional home room team members to support business objectives.

Essential Functions:

  • Create/maintain Hardware-related Standards and Process Spec documents and updating related parts managements systems

  • Define and maintain the internal Specifications & Standards “catalog” of Mechanical Hardware and Application Manuals, Mechanical Standards drawings & documentation, and the underlying infrastructure (including CAD/PDM/PLM tool suite).

  • Act as Mechanical Standards focal for Palmdale site and facilitate discussions between Mechanical and Electrical teams

  • Service the system/product Design Engineering community with part selection, application, and assembly/installation guidance through 1-on-1, design review, and peer review scenarios

  • Service the Program’s supply chain, internal manufacturing & assembly, and logistics/field support communities when Part/Standard product or process questions/issues arise

  • Performs Supplier Process Audits and work with suppliers for parts and process qualifications.

  • Communicate clearly and regularly with team members, program customers, functional management, and applicable stakeholders to ensure customer requirements are met.   

  • Represents the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects.

  • Participate in failure investigations and root cause analysis.

  • Participate in industry standards committees and company initiatives

  • Some travel is required while supporting a variety of NGAS programs.

  • Works under only general direction.


Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university and 5 years of STEM related engineering experience, a Master's Degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years of experience, or a Doctorate Degree in STEM discipline with no experience

  • 3+ years of industry experience working on Hardware (Fluid Fittings/Mechanisms/Fastener/Bearings/etc.) design, development, manufacturing, qualification, and application

  • Knowledge of fastener/process selection and application at the system design level

  • Experience supporting aircraft production lines, Material Review Board and ongoing sustainment programs

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or another STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university

  • Experience in an aerospace engineering environment

  • Familiarity with the Industry Specifications & Standards and the supplier base relating to Fastening Systems and Military Aircraft

  • Standard part and process knowledge and experience

  • Involvement with Industry standards committees and working groups

  • Proficient with contemporary PDM/PLM, CAD, and related engineering systems/tools

  • Familiarity with 6 Sigma, RCCA and Lean improvement methodologies

  • Demonstrated high performance in self-direction and timely completion of assignments within dynamic & high-pressure team environments

  • Strong leadership qualities, strong verbal , and written communication skills. Able manage and leverage various communication styles

  • An active U.S. Government DoD Secret clearance with access to Special Programs.

Salary Range: $92,200 USD - $138,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
