Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems Division (SSSD) has an opening for a Sr. Principal Structural Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, CA.
As a Sr. Principal Structural Engineer you will be supporting the Structures Design, Analysis, and Integration (SDAI) team in the Strategic Space Systems Division (SSSD) of Northrop Grumman Corporation. The SDAI Department provides key Design and Analysis support for most of the Space Park programs and other collaborating Organizations.
The Structural Design, Analysis, and Integration (SDAI) Department Functional Homeroom provides skilled engineers to key program areas. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing critical Stress Analysis support to various Space Park Programs, with opportunities for diversification across multiple programs and upward growth.Â
Roles and Responsibilities include:
Support existing and upcoming Space programs
Participate in the resolution of complex Structural analysis problems for space-based platforms and missions involving the analysis of propulsion systems, metallic, and composite structures.
Architect, lead and perform structural analysis of propulsion systems, structures and deployables.
Perform requirements definition, preliminary analysis of layouts, detail designs and final drawing release.
Prepare, perform and lead design review presentations and support to fabrication.
Work closely with design, manufacturing, materials and processes and test to develop design requirements, define structural load paths, develop FEMs and perform detailed analysis for engineering drawings to fabricate flight and structural test articles.
Author and or support the generation and revision of structural analysis stress reports, procedures, and process documents in support of the program and functional homeroom organization.
Additional responsibilities may include:
Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs.
Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling.
Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis.
Tools utilized will include FEMAP and NX Nastran, and may include Mathcad, MATLAB, and a variety of additional software applications.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) from an accredited university
9+ years of experience in space and defense industry experience with a B.S. OR
7+ years of experience in space and defense industry experience with a M.S. OR
4+ years of experience in space and defense industry experience with a PhD.
Experience in Composite and Metallic materials Stress Analysis
Ability to acquire and maintain a Dept of Defense Top Secret clearance -AND/OR - SCI access with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI)
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor and/or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and/or Aerospace Engineering
Responsible Stress Engineering (RSE) experience and experience leading engineering teams
Experience authoring technical and/or requirements documents
Experience working on Special Access Programs
Participation in multiple design cycles in spacecraft/aircraft development programs
Active Dept of Defense Top Secret clearance with a background investigation date within 6 years -AND/OR -Â Active SCI access with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within 6 years
