Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems Division is looking for you to join our team as a Cryocooler Systems Engineer/ Principal Cryocooler Systems Engineer 2/3 for the Thermal, Propulsion & Cryocooler Systems (TPCS) Department. This position is located in Redondo Beach, CA.

Cryocooler Systems Engineer responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Review, analyze, and understand Cryocooler Operating Unit objectives, system concept of operation, system architectures and interfaces, and sensor and subsystem equipment, functions, interfaces, and operations.

  • Use a range of methods and tools to capture stakeholder and system requirements, facilitating discussion and understanding of system usage, and enhancing a culture of rigorous analysis, architecture, and design.

  • Collaborate with other Engineers in the development of work products, including: System Specifications, Interface Definitions, System Diagrams, Systems Analyses, Trade Studies, and Detailed Designs.

  • Effectively communicating and transferring system architecture and design knowledge with other functions including Software Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Manufacturing, Program Management, Suppliers, and Customers.

  • Develop integration & test plans for subsystems across all interfaces (i.e., mechanical, electrical, and software), which includes planning, test execution, analysis, and/or troubleshooting of system operation.

  • Support development of system models and simulations; perform data acquisition and analysis of scenario results; develop conclusions and recommendations.

  • Work with peers and specialists on cross-functional teams to solve a wide range of difficult and unique issues to meet shared product milestones.

  • Work effectively within the organization and convey systems engineering results and conclusions in a way meaningful to the design engineers.

  • Able to succinctly and effectively brief status and results to program and customer senior leadership.

  • Development and coordination of engineering artifacts for program design reviews.

Basic Qualifications: 

This requisition may be filled at either the Systems Engineer/ Principal Systems Engineer level.

  • BQ for Systems Engineer: Bachelor’s Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline plus 2 years of engineering experience; OR Master's Degree in a STEM discipline

  • BQ for Principal Systems Engineer: Bachelor’s Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline plus 5 years of engineering experience; OR Master's Degree in a STEM discipline plus 3 years of engineering experience

  • Previous systems engineering experience

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOD Top Secret and SCI security clearance. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master's Degree in STEM (Science Technology Engineering or Math)

  • Active DOD Top Secret and/or SCI security clearance

  • Experience in space cryocooler subsystem or cryocooler device development programs, with a practical understanding of thermodynamics

  • Experience in InfraRed (IR) and Cryocooler sensor subsystems

  • Experience analyzing design and test documents, performing hands-on teardown, rebuild, and test products in the lab, and troubleshooting components and/or products at various stages of integration

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including ability to work well within and outside of the organization including customers, vendors, and leadership with minimal oversight

  • Experience supporting production programs


Salary Range: $82,400 USD - $123,600 USD
Salary Range 2: $101,400 USD - $152,200 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
