Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has a Section Manager opening for the Mechanical Design Team. This part time role is located at our Redondo Beach facility in the greater Los Angeles area, and is part of the Vehicle Integration Department (PAI & OKC). The group’s charter is to maintain and evolve capabilities in air vehicle subsystems technology that will continue to enable innovative solutions for our mission architectures.

This Functional Manager position is responsible for providing leadership and
management support to a section consisting of between 10 to 20 engineering
leads and individual contributors. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, organized, independently directed with good problem solving skills, able to perform effectively despite concurrent work tasks and will possess strong
communication, leadership, and team building skills. Travel, both domestic and
international, up to 25% may be required for this role.

As a Functional Section Manager (SM) reporting to the Department Manager
within the Vehicle Integration Department (PAI & OKC), approximately 15%
of the SM’s time will be spent performing leadership, people management, and
supervisory duties such as management of personnel (direction & coaching),
program/project reviews, coordination of job assignments, staffing, recruiting,
timecard approval, performance reviews, and process improvement activities. In
addition, the individual will support technology and business development
activities, proposals, and design reviews. The balance of the time (85%) is
expected to be spent supporting direct programs.

Responsibilities include leading a team of 10-20 people who manage aircraft
subsystems architecture, suppliers, analysis, and testing. Specific
responsibilities include technical and managerial leadership, problem solving,
business support/budget management, hiring/staffing, and other functional
activities. The successful candidate is expected to spend his/her time managing the team as well as working directly on a variety of air vehicle technical
programs.

The successful candidate must have experience working with diverse technical
teams, and must also be experienced with the design, assembly and/or test of
flight hardware. Experience with flight hardware acceptance testing and
documentation is preferred.

Qualifications :

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in a STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics) discipline with 9 years of experience or Masters with 7 years of experience.
  • Ability to travel within the US and Internationally
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering preferred

Prior technical and subcontracts management experience, along with a track
record of leading a highly skilled team and suppliers in the design integration
phases of air vehicle systems within schedule, labor and material cost
requirements is preferred.

Prior management and cost account management experience including EVMS

Experience with the design, development, and implementation of aircraft
mechanisms and fire protection systems as well as a working knowledge of
complex mechanical/electrical subsystems and integration of subsystems
hardware and software into vehicle systems is desirable.

Current, active DoD Secret Clearance

Prior experience as a Vehicle Systems IPT Lead or the ability to execute as a
Vehicle Systems IPT Lead. A Vehicle Systems IPT Lead is responsible for the
design, development and supplier management of the Arresting Hook System,
Weapons Bay Door Drive System, Fire Protection Systems as well as Propulsion
Integration. The IPT Lead will work with a team of Responsible Engineers to
interface with Supply Chain Management and Leadership Teams from the
Suppliers to build relations, ensure product quality and performance are
maintained in a fast-paced, dynamic production environment. This includes the
effort to define the systems and the integrated planning and control of the
technical program efforts of design and specialty engineering, as well as the
management of supplier procurement, production on time delivery and technical execution.

Salary Range: $130,500 USD - $195,700 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
