Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems Division has an opening for a Staff Mechanical Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals and maintain our world class capabilities in a dynamic environment. This position will be located in Redondo Beach CA.

This position will be supporting a space program. The ideal candidate will be required to apply engineering principles to contribute to the timely planning and execution of mechanical integration and test of spacecraft, including reading and understanding engineering drawings, specifications, plans, and requirements documents. This individual will author test products/detailed work procedures to implement and comply with these documents, as well as interact across engineering disciplines to clarify requirements and understand limitations, constraints, and potential conflicts. The selected individual must interact across organizations to coordinate readiness for task execution including facilities, personnel, non-flight hardware/ equipment, flight hardware, configuration.  The position will support problem resolution, paperwork closeout, and requirements verification.

Essential Functions

  • Update work procedures to incorporate lessons learned and any changes to governing documents

  • Provide mechanical engineering support to the factory floor for clarification, troubleshooting, work procedure modification, post-test critique, break-of-configuration review, and review and evaluation of test data

  • Work and execute with some technical oversight

  • Working across disciplines with specialists from a variety of departments to write procedures and coordinate planning.

  • Assuring flight hardware is assembled and tested safely and test requirements and objectives are met.

  • Candidate must possess strong communication and technical writing skills, a demonstrated understanding of mechanical principles, and an ability and desire to learn and problem solve. Experience with mechanical design, test, structures, stress, Mechanical Ground Support Equipment, or manufacturing is desired.

Flexible Schedules:  For example, some roles offer the ability to work a 9/80 work schedule, which allows an employee to work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday and take every other Friday off of work

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Science Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) discipline plus 14 years of engineering experience OR Masters of Science Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline plus 12 years of engineering experience.

  • Proven leadership experience on a project and/or team.

  • Experience using SAP, Windows software packages or other electronic databases.

  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret Clearance OR SCI Access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of Manufacturing Readiness Assessment’s and establishing Manufacturing Readiness Levels per DoD customer requirements.

  • Demonstrated Project Management experience.

  • Previous experience on high volume space programs.

  • Experience with composites or similar products.

  • Bachelors of Science in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Degree.

  • Experience with CAD tools.


Salary Range: $141,800 USD - $212,800 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
