The Electronics & Payloads engineering directorate within SSSD is sourcing a Structural & Thermal Analysis Consulting Engineer (STACE) to join our team of highly qualified and diverse individuals. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, California. 

The STACE will exercise mastery of analysis theory, techniques, and tools to drive innovation, resolve complex problems, and champion knowledge sharing.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Serve as a technical authority and spokesperson on structural and thermal analysis of electromechanical and electronic products

  • Integrate analysis tools and techniques across multiple functions, programs, and levels of system integration

  • Shape early requirements definition and decomposition with respect to dynamic and thermal environments

  • Establish effective design, analysis, and test practices to prevent failures due to cumulative damage

  • Institute improved workmanship screens to efficiently precipitate latent defects

  • Influence product qualification strategies and planning across a range of mission classes and risk regimes

  • Support program execution as a subject matter expert and independent reviewer who efficiently and swiftly resolves complex technical issues

  • Develop standards, guidelines, and training for structural and thermal analysis

  • Spearhead a multidisciplinary and cross-sector mechanical analysis CoP

  • Collaborate across multiple engineering homerooms to facilitate knowledge sharing, propagate best practices, and share lessons learned

  • Mentor junior and senior engineers in support of bench development

Basic Qualifications

  • B.S. in STEM discipline from an ABET accredited institution and 20+ years of engineering experience with Bachelors degree, 18+ Years with Masters; 15+ Years with PhD.

  • Experience with vibroacoustic analysis of electromechanical or electronic products

  • Experience with thermal analysis of electromechanical or electronic products

  • Active U.S. Government security clearance at the Top Secret level with a background investigation date within 6 years, OR an active U.S. Government SCI access with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within the last 5 years, OR a Department of Energy Q clearance with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within 5 years

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited university

  • Experience with variety of structural and thermal analysis tools and finite element modeling techniques

  • Experience with process development and continuous improvement techniques


Salary Range: $192,400 USD - $288,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
