Northrop Grumman, Strategic Space Systems Division, has an opening for a Manager Mechanical Engineering 2 - Additive Manufacturing to join our team of highly qualified and diverse individuals. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, California.

The Manager Mechanical Engineering 2 - Additive Manufacturing, is responsible for the execution of Mechanical Manufacturing and Engineering department objectives specializing in Additive Manufacturing. Additive manufacturing (AM), commonly known as 3-D printing, is defined by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) as “The process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer.” 

Section manager will be responsible for incorporating various AM processes, including but not limited to, Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Stereolithography (SLA) and Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF). Each has various use cases and opportunities to be evaluated by the Additive team for applicability in a production setting.  In addition to managing non-flight demand, section manager will work with and lead the Additive team to qualify material and processes for flight programs.  Candidate will have a technically diverse background in multiple disciplines of flight and prototype manufacturing, engineering, and assembly.  Experience with budget management, process development and/or experience developing training procedures preferred.

Position will be responsible for development, co-location, and expansion of additive equipment across Space Park campus, which includes collaboration with facilities, section managers, engineering, and outside vendors to ensure uninterrupted production.  Candidate must have a drive to understand and seek out cutting edge technology and advise management team on applicability for MME products and customers.

Position requires cross functional collaboration to support fluid program requests and support priority adjudication for additive demand. Long term strategic planning experience, and/or experience with employee development and performance tracking is preferred.  Position serves as a primary interface with engineering and program customers to support cost effective production schedules and develop CONOPs for AM material inventory.  

Responsibilities Include:

  • Managing and driving schedule execution by facilitating production for a team of engineers and machinists

  • Interfacing with engineers, schedulers, industrial engineers, global supply chain, and program management to meet schedule, cost, and production milestones

  • Staffing and training machinists and engineers on Additive processes, maintaining critical skills matrices of each employee

  • Managing indirect and capital budgets  

  • Developing and managing process improvement in advanced manufacturing and digital transformation initiatives to improve performance, reduce cost and drive schedule accuracy

  • Overseeing leadership development and knowledge retention efforts

  • Working closely with the Department Managers and fellow section managers to define and implement department strategies

Flexible Schedules:  For example, some roles offer the ability to work a 9/80 work schedule, which allows an employee to work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday and take every other Friday off of work

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) plus 5 years of experience in a technical role OR Master’s Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline plus 3 years of experience in a technical role

  • Proven leadership experience on a project and/or team

  • Experience in the Aerospace and Defense Industry

  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret clearance OR SCI access

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of project schedule baselining and scope definition

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Business Administration

  • Experience in defense, aerospace or high-reliability product development industries

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools

  • Experience with MS Project


Salary Range: $130,500 USD - $195,700 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
