We are seeking a talented Systems Engineer / Principal Systems Engineer to join our team in Rocket Center, WV just outside of Cumberland, MD. Rocket Center, WV is located along the North Branch Potomac River in Mineral County, West Virginia and is home to the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory (ABL), a government installation operated by Northrop Grumman. The ABL site is home to technical and highly skilled talent who design, develop, and manufacture tactical rocket motors, medium caliber ammunition, composite components and end items, and fuze and electronics equipment. For decades, the talented team at ABL have supported national security efforts by developing and building defense systems and missile products for DoD customers and U.S. allies.

Job Summary:

The Systems Engineer / Principal Systems Engineer will focus on Requirements Management, Reliability Analysis and Systems Safety Analysis. You will be a part of our enterprise-wide digital transformation initiatives with continued efforts to embrace change, move quickly and drive innovation.  The successful candidate will be collaborative, open, transparent, and team-oriented with a focus on team empowerment & shared responsibility, flexibility, continuous learning, and a culture of automation.  

Specific responsibilities:

  • Support the systems engineering needs of diverse programs at ABL by formalizing the requirements management functions of development work and performing reliability and system safety functions

  • Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, reliability analysis and system safety analysis of rocket motor propulsion systems

  • Analyses are performed at the sub-system product level to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, operation, maintenance and disposal

  • Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints

  • Work with a broad customer base to identify unique requirements, flow the requirements into design documentation, and work with a diverse design team to support the build and test of propulsion systems

Additional expected duties:

  • Present to customers on the capabilities of current products, performance analyses, design information, and requirements verification methods

  • Generate, review and manage requirements sets covering all aspects of performance and nonperformance, including mechanical interfaces, electrical interfaces, data requirements, environmental requirements, reliability, and systems safety

  • Awareness and responsiveness to contract milestones and deliverables

  • Partner with a team of subsystem engineers and subject matter experts to ensure the designs are sufficient to meet the system requirements

  • Partner with integration and test engineers to ensure all requirements are verified through inspection, analysis, demonstration, or test often by providing test and data reduction inputs

  • Collaborate on direction to ensure production tests and troubleshooting tests are executed correctly and resulting data conforms to requirements

  • Develop simulation models for propulsion systems

This requisition may be filled at a higher grade based on qualifications listed below.

Basic Qualifications for Systems Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) related discipline with 2 years of relevant experience; Master’s degree in STEM related discipline with 0 years of relevant experience

  • Strong requirements development experience and management skills using DOORS or similar requirements management software

  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate to team members, customers, and suppliers

  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Defense Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship is a prerequisite.

Basic Qualifications for Principal Systems Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) related discipline with 5 years of relevant experience; Master’s degree in STEM related discipline with 3 years of relevant experience; or a PhD

  • Strong requirements development experience and management skills using DOORS or similar requirements management software

  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate to team members, customers, and suppliers

  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Defense Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship is a prerequisite.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with propulsion systems

  • Familiarity with programs or projects in a production phase

  • Experience managing system requirements and requirement verification

  • Experience using DOORS

  • Familiarity with reliability analysis

  • Familiarity with systems safety analysis

This position falls under a Federal Explosives License issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for this location.  Candidates hired into this role will be required to complete and submit an Employee Possessor Questionnaire to ATF for approval to be a possessor.


Salary Range: $71,100 USD - $106,700 USD
Salary Range 2: $87,600 USD - $131,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
