Northrop Grumman is in need of a Material Process Engineer to work at its ABL facility in Rocket Center, West Virginia.  The level of the position can be hired to level 2 or level 3 as determined by demonstrated education, skills, and experience.

Job Description:

The successful applicant will lead and develop various materials and processing (M&P) efforts on a wide variety of exciting aerospace and defense articles, including rocket motors, warheads, ammunition, fuzes, metal structures, composite structures, and electronic components.  While the position will primarily focus on metallurgy science and engineering, supporting M&P efforts on non-metallic materials will also be required. 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Function as the facility’s subject matter expert on metallurgy and related material processes.
  • Establish procedures and best practices relative to the design and manufacture of metallic and non-metallic materials.
  • Assist in failure investigations for determining cause of raw material related defects and failures from processing during welding, heat treating and finishing operations. 
  • Assist Product Development teams in selecting optimal materials, treatments, finishes and associated specifications for desired and repeatable results, as well as support investigation of material issues encountered during manufacture and testing. 
  • Assist Manufacturing teams and Suppliers in resolving failures that occur during processing. 
  • Oversee and assist technicians with on site preparation and examination of Metallurgical samples of various materials to determine compliance to desired material specifications.  Oversee and review results of mechanical testing of these materials.

Basic Qualifications for level 2:

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM with strong preference in Metallurgy
  • 2 years of related work experience with strong preference of experience in steel mill, heat treat facility, or Aerospace Metallurgical position.
  • Must be a US citizen and able to obtain a Department of Defense Secret clearance. U.S. citizenship is a prerequisite.

Basic Qualifications for level 3:

  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy
  • 6 years of related work experience with strong preference of experience in steel mill, heat treat facility, or Aerospace Metallurgical position.
  • Must be a US citizen and able to obtain a Department of Defense Secret clearance. U.S. citizenship is a prerequisite.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the chemical, physical and atomic properties and structures of metals associated with alloys and metals such as steel, iron, nickel and aluminum.
  • Knowledge of Heat Treating and Metal Finishing processes as they apply to alloys and metals such as steel, iron, nickel, and aluminum.
  • Understand and interpret design drawings and to make recommendations for improvements.
  • Effective writing skills to create and document detailed records of investigations, experiments and research conducted along with the results.
  • Excellent communication skills to converse efficiently with other professionals and to work together to solve technical problems as they arise.
  • Teamwork ethic to work as a part of a unit, business awareness, technical expertise, attention to detail, and leadership skills


Salary Range: $64,600 USD - $97,000 USD
Salary Range 2: $79,700 USD - $119,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
