Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is looking for a Sr. Principal Systems Engineer to join our team in Rolling Meadows, IL.  As an integral member of the Special Tactical Electronic Warfare Systems (STEWS) team, selected System Engineer will participate in design, development, and modernization to systems ranging from airborne RF and IR systems, laboratory test stations, and transportable flight line electronic combat system test sets.  Candidate will be expected to identify and drive the induction of future technology updates, as well as new technology inductions to resolve current/pending obsolescence issues on existing fielded systems.


  • Apply the core principles of systems engineering in order to deliver innovative, affordable, highly reliable systems solutions that meet customer needs, key performance parameters, and program execution goals.

  • Lead multi-disciplined engineering team from system design through integration and test of highly complex technical systems.

  • Generate and update system and sub-system level specifications, including requirements traceability, creation of verification traceability (tracing requirements to test plans/procedures/results), and update and maintenance of system drawings and documents

  • Research, design, development, and simulation of Electronic Warfare systems, and defining and developing processing algorithms for real-time implementation

  • Provide briefings and demonstrations to management and external customers

  • Performs functional analysis, detailed trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.

  • Occasional travel is required.

Basic Qualifications for a Sr Principal Systems Engineer:

  • BS degree in electrical, system engineering or related technical degree with at least 9 years of related experience; MS degree in electrical, system engineering or related technical degree with at least 7 years of related experience; Doctorate in electrical, system engineering or related technical degree with at least 4 years of related experience

  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to create and support a cooperative team environment

  • Experience working on Department of Defense contracts

  • Prior experience designing hardware, firmware, and programming software to best allocate functions for each product

  • Experience in leading hardware, software and systems design teams, demonstrated ability to provide critical insight in order to identify when teams require intervention, the expertise to define and remove stumbling blocks hindering a successful outcome, and the skill to take appropriate action(s) to return the team to a successful path to completion

  • Have at least five (5) years of experience with the maintenance and sustainment of Electronic Warfare (EW) systems

  • Experience in the design, development and test, or sustainment of airborne, tactical electronic systems

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) Secret or greater level of clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  •  PhD in electrical, systems engineering or related technical degree with 9 years related experience

  • Familiarity with the theory, operation and practice of both airborne and ground-based tactical radars

  • Digital circuit design experience, including simulation & schematic capture through test and integration.

  • Prototyping and first-hand debug experience testing digital subsystems, such as circuit card development involving FPGAs, embedded processors, graphics processors and/or high-speed data interfaces such as PCI-E.

  • System modeling and simulation experience designing Matlab based models of system functionality to include FPGA functionality.

  • Active DoD Secret or greater level clearance

Salary Range: $120,000 USD - $180,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
