NG Space Systems has an opening for a Deputy Aerospace Vehicle Engineering (AVE) Chief Engineer (CE) to join our Sentinel team of highly qualified, highly knowledgeable, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Roy, UT. Learn more about the Sentinel (GBSD) program here.  Northrop Grumman supports the Air Force’s sustainment, development, production and deployment of hardware and system modifications for Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Ground and Airborne Launch Control Systems, Launch Facilities and associated infrastructure.

What you will get to do:

This individual’s role is to work alongside and act on the behalf of the AVE CE to support the AVE Integrated Product Team (IPT) in the design, build, and test of the Sentinel Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) such that it successfully meets requirements as proven by design reviews, detailed analyses, characterization testing, and the agreed to qualification verification processes—including the successful execution of the Engineering Manufacturing Design (EMD) phase of the program and the successful transition to the Production/Sustainment phase of the program. Duties include working alongside and acting on the behalf of the AVE CE to support the  AVE IPT in the design, build and test of associated test support equipment; creation, validation and verification of modeling, simulation, and analysis (MS&A) products; creation and verification of AVE Electrical/Electronic design integration products; creation and verification of AVE Mechanical Design Integration products; creation of AVE requirements products; evaluation of AVE Segment/Element/Lower Level design review products; evaluation of Integration and Test activities, and evaluation of associated system engineering products including but not limited to the Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) products for the AVE missile hardware and software. Support is also required in the evaluation of AVE compliance to internal and external interface, nuclear surety, cyber, and nuclear hardness requirements. This position is required throughout EMD. The role includes support to the CE ownership of the technical baseline of the AVE design including the aspects of the design needed to support all design reviews leading up to AVE and Weapon System Critical Design Reviews; all AVE required Integration, Assembly and Test activities (including flight testing); all activities required to ensure a successful System Qualification Verification Review (SQVR) including qualification planning and execution activities; and all activities related to ensuring successful Production, Deployment, and Sustainment efforts. The individual will be responsible for supporting and acting on the behalf of the AVE CE in ensuring the quality of the development of AVE required products, chairing the AVE Engineering Review Board, and coordination inside and outside of the AVE team on performing tasks associated with ensuring the success of the Sentinel EMD program including resolution of issues, close out of design reviews, and approvals of all technical related products.  This position reports directly to the AVE IPT Lead.

This positions standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM with 15 years of engineering experience
  • Expert knowledge of Vehicle Product development designs including Structures; guidance, navigation, software , propulsion, electronics/payloads, communications, materials, subsystems, and Integration and Testing
  • Expert knowledge in the development of high-fidelity aerospace vehicle control and dynamics, vehicle structural dynamics, and accuracy simulations and performance assessment (including propulsion, steering and control, and accuracy)
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) experience and familiarity with high accuracy inertial measurement system modeling and performance, including calibration and alignment principles, Kalman filtering, and instrument error modeling
  • SME experience in subsystem and vehicle model maturation and validation using test and proven analytical methods
  • SME experience and knowledge in principles of MBSE (Model Based System Engineering)
  • Active Secret security clearance and ability to obtain a Top Secret and special access clearance (SAP)
  • 5+ years of experience with technical / vehicle engineering development leadership

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expert knowledge of strategic level nuclear hardened designs
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Effective leadership skills
  • Expert knowledge of cyber related design compliance to requirements
  • Expert understanding of verification and validation principles of MS&A work products
  • Expert knowledge of ICBM / strategic missile designs including, flight testing, performance analysis, solid rocket motor propulsion based stages; missile guidance, navigation, and control of strategic missile systems (including software); liquid propulsion based post boost systems; and payload reentry systems—including nuclear warhead equipped reentry vehicles (RV) (including non-nuclear capable RV test vehicles) and associated countermeasures
  • Top Secret security clearance and ability to obtain a special access clearance
  • 5+ years of experience with Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) or related missile-based activities

Salary Range: $149,700 USD - $224,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
