Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems has an opening for a Principal or Sr. Principal Engineer Systems to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in San Diego, CA.

The Principal or Sr. Principal Engineer Systems will perform technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.

Essential Functions:

  • Implement and develop tools to support deployment and characterization of hardware, software, and network

  • Automated tools ninja

  • Ability to creatively solve problems in the field of software and network development

This requisition may be filled at a higher grade based on qualifications listed below.

Basic Qualifications for a Principal Systems Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s in Science degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) with 5 years of engineering experience; Master’s in Science/Engineering with 3 years of engineering experience

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance

  • Test automation experience

  • Fluency in at least one scripting language such as Python 

Basic Qualifications for a Sr. Principal Systems Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s in Science degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) with 9 years of engineering experience; Master’s in Science/Engineering with 7 years of engineering experience

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance

  • Test automation experience

  • Fluency in at least one scripting language such as Python 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Infrastructure (build and deployment) automation

  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes or similar tools

  • Experience in VMware, Red Hat Linux, Windows Server

  • Experience with system hardening or application of security controls

  • Active DoD Secret Clearance 


Salary Range: $101,200 USD - $151,800 USD
Salary Range 2: $125,500 USD - $188,300 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
