Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a consulting engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals at our Rancho Bernardo - San Diego, Ca campus.  The consulting engineer will lead the Vehicle Management Systems (VMS) team for a restricted access program spanning multiple sites across the United States and primarily located in Southern California.  As VMS lead reporting to the IPT Program Director for Vehicle Engineering, the person in this role will oversee technical execution for a team of approximately 40-60 personnel.

This position requires in depth knowledge  interest in defining and developing advanced Vehicle Management Systems (VMS) for aircraft. The selected engineer will work directly with internal and external customers to define architectures, derive requirements, trade alternatives, identify and perform analyses, and work across technical disciplines within the larger program applications. The successful candidate will have extensive familiarity with how vehicle systems operate at a systems level - including but not limited to avionics hardware, flight control computers, actuation systems, air data systems, propulsion, communications, and vehicle dynamics/behavior.  To be most successful, this expertise should span the development lifecycle, from concept development to demonstration systems and through to deliverable systems and operation. Mode/Skill definition/execution, performance/range computations, and team leadership are of particular interest for this role. The person in this role performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems.

Responsibilities include:

Coordinate directly with internal and external leadership, both technical and programmaticTranslate customer concepts into achievable physical and digital systemsManagement of a diverse team of engineers including, but not limited to embedded software development, vehicle model development, Level 1 and 2 software test and verification, vehicle control law design/development/verifications, and autonomous mission management logicDefine system trades, then recommend and implement strategies to down select approaches for VMS solutions based on mission understandingBe willing and able to act as the technical authority for the programUnderstanding customer mission needs and priorities to adjust the team’s direction in an agile fashionUnderstand domain-specific limitations and expectations for mission success

Basic Qualifications:

·A degree in Physics, Math, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering or a related technical field and:·20+ years of experience with a Bachelor’s Degree·18+ years of experience with a Master’s Degree·15+ years of experience with a PhD·Experience engaging directly with internal and external technical and programmatic representatives·Outstanding problem solving and troubleshooting skills·Willingness and ability to work onsite and more than 80% within a closed area at the San Diego, Rancho Bernardo Campus.· Ability to assimilate new concepts quickly and independently· Active Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in technical leadership for VMS systems, focused on successfully delivering systems to customer(s)Significant experience in VMS Development, Integration, and Implementation.Extensive experience in developing and implementing novel systemsExperience with processes and procedures related to flight critical software development and system integrationDemonstrated history of personnel development and successful team engagementInterest in and track record of providing successful mentorshipAbility to work across multiple geographically separated campuses Excellent communication skills for both in-person and written content Current Top Secret, SCI, and/or SAP accesses

Salary Range: $192,400 USD - $288,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
