We are looking for you to join our team as a based out of San Diego, CA. As a Sr Staff Engineer Systems Architect at Northrop Grumman you will have a challenging and rewarding opportunity to be a part of our Enterprise-wide digital transformation. What You Will Get To Do:
Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is a trusted provider of mission-enabling solutions for global security.  Our organization is chartered with providing the skills, innovative technologies to develop, design, produce and sustain optimized product lines across the sector while providing a decisive advantage to the warfighter. From a networking perspective, we support over 200+ systems that span a very wide range of customers (STRATCOM, USAF, USN, NSA, White House, DISA, and the USA overall). Our networking solutions span a very wide and complex range of disciplines from pure physics, through communication and computing, through cloud, AI and Cyber technologies.  And our systems survive in the worst imaginable conditions.

Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.

Key responsibilities include:

  • System architecture subject matter expertise to the organization, supporting overall business and program development, customer engagement, and mission evaluations

  • Coordinate technical solutions and implementation across all of the various communication system based programs, ensuring technical viability, applicability, and consistency

  • Be a thought leader in development of future system improvements, extensions, and updates  

  • Demonstrated proficiency in analytical thinking and problem solving skills

  • Excellent decision making and communication (written and oral) skills

  • Selected candidate may have to provide indirect leadership across many stakeholders to include internal NGC performers as well as partners and customers.

  • A firm understanding of digital transformation approaches that can be brought to bear towards architecture development. In addition to the usual lean-agile and MB(x) approaches, this person will need to lead the development of digital twins that represent architectural choices.

  • A firm understanding of existing architectures underlying the various layers and piece parts: including communication system architecture (to include NC3 systems.

  • A firm understanding of architecture development approaches: including USDOD approaches and DODAF frameworks. Ideally this will also include current state of the art in development of systems-of-systems architecture approaches being used across commercial and USDOD efforts. Ideally this will also include the ability to define and use relevant metrics that can be used to evaluate and trade architectural constructs (in addition to compliance of standards and interface, open systems etc.)

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field with a focus on communication systems Active DoD Secret Clearance, ability to obtain DoD Top Secret and Special Program Access (SAP) Clearance

  • Experience leading architecture development teams that may have to work within shifting requirements and unclear data sets.

  • Experience conducting and leading meetings with senior leadership and customers.

  • Recent experience in requirements allocation & derivation and verification traceability

  • Experience using tools needed & that are available for architecture development, modeling and execution – including tools such as CAMEO for MB(x) through analytical tools such as Matlab and STK.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D in Systems Engineering, Computer Science Engineering or Electrical Engineering with a focus on networking, digital communication systems or equivalent with 9 years of experience

  • High proficiency with tools required for communication system and network modeling and simulation

  • Background in digital communications theory and commercial and military wireless networking technologies

  • Demonstrated depth and breadth in the physical through application layers and how the aggregation of these partitioned capabilities to accomplish required missions

  • Demonstrated skills in bridging the gap between theoretical and practical and in performing associated trade off analysis

  • Experience collaborating with DoD and other related US government agencies

  • Recent experience in Model-Based System Engineering

  • Ability and willingness to travel

  • Ability to obtain Sensitive Compartmentalized Information (SCI) Clearance

Salary Range: $157,500 USD - $236,300 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
