The Power Electronics Group consists of incredible people with backgrounds in Mechanical, Electrical, and Systems Engineering with focus on Control Systems and Electromagnetic Design.  The Power Electronics Group is one facet of the Hardware Engineering community here at Northrop Grumman Sunnyvale which also includes Mechanical Design, Thermal and Structural Analysis, and Materials Analysis to name a few.  Our engineers find professional fulfillment in leading teams, performing cutting-edge research, and being in the forefront of the design process through our partnership with the program office business leadership.

We are seeking an Electrical Design Engineer with in depth knowledge of electromagnetic theory applied to the design and analysis of mega-watt rating electrical machines. The candidate should be familiar with different types of electrical machines, with a focus on permanent magnet and wound-rotor synchronous machines. The candidate will be the design lead responsible for performing design trade studies, preliminary and detailed machine design, machine design assessments, evaluation of machine performance due to manufacturing variations, and evaluation of acoustic and temperature performance conditions. Experience in ferromagnetic materials used in laminations, permanent magnet grades, electric machine insulation systems, electric machine thermal management and top level motor drive architectures is a plus.

This position located in Sunnyvale, CA.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
  • 9+ years of experience in Electric Machine design and analysis
  • Electromagnetic analysis experience with FEA tools such as ANSYS Maxwell, Altair Flux 2D/3D, or similar type of electromagnetic analysis software
  • Designing electric machine for operation using inverter / drive applications MATLAB/Simulink proficiency
  • Demonstrated technical team leadership
  • U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain a DoD security clearance (No dual citizenship)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Science or Ph.D. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) degree
  • 9+ years of electrical machine and/or inverter / drive engineering experience
  • Experience with software for system evaluation such as Matlab Simulink, Simplorer, etc.
  • Good understanding of construction / manufacturing methods of electric machines
  • Experience with electric machines for marine propulsion applications
  • Experience implementing designs meeting military specifications and requirements
  • Experience with naval nuclear propulsion programs
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Excellent communication skills

Salary Range: $128,500 USD - $188,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
