We are looking for you to join our team as a Staff FPGA Design Engineer based out of San Jose, CA or REMOTELY (will require 25-50% travel to Space Park/Los Angeles facility). As a Staff Digital FPGA Design Engineer at Northrop Grumman you will have a challenging and rewarding opportunity to be a part of our Enterprise-wide digital transformation. What You’ll get to Do:

Join our team to work on the development and integration of complex electronic test systems, as well as, electronic hardware units which includes support of Space Flight programs. Responsibilities may include:

  • Work on development and verification of VHDL designs for digital comms ground systems

  • Write and validate digital designs based on a provided system architecture and set of unit requirements (block diagrams, VHDL code, simulation, validation in HW, system integration support and troubleshooting)

  • Detailed Digital analysis at the component level

  • FPGA design, functional simulation, and test vector creation

  • PCB/CCA design, development, test, and integration

  • Electronic Unit design, development, test, and integration

  • Electronic Test System (Test Set) design, development, test, and post-delivery support

  • Worst case performance analysis for critical Digital signals

  • Be part of planning, collaboration, development activities and continuous integration using the Atlassian product suite, including Jira, Bitbucket, and Confluence as well as GitHub.

  • Perform digital designs in a team environment with other engineering functions, including: Hardware Engineering, Systems Engineering, Product Engineering, Software Engineering, Production, Procurement, and Program Management to meet schedule and technical requirements.

  • Developing and presenting design reviews for internal and external customers

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, or another STEM degree from an accredited institution and 14+ years of engineering experience; OR +12 years of engineering experience with a STEM Master's degree; OR 9+ years of experience with a STEM PhD. degree 

  • Substantial experience in VHDL code development (writing, block diagrams, simulation) within Xilinx Vivado and QuestaSim environments

  • Experience validating and troubleshooting VHDL design on HW in lab environment

  • Experience with digital comms systems implemented in FPGAs preferred (ex. Digital modulation schemes, clock/carrier recovery, digital filters, up/down sampling, encoding/decoding)

  • Must be willing and able to travel 25-50% to the Los Angeles area for testing

  • Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering from an accredited institution

  • Experience in DSP architecture, comm systems theories, etc

  • Design and test experience in Analog/RF and Digital technology

  • Experience with Electronic drawer/unit design

  • Experience with small to large electronic subsystems

  • Experience with PCBs/CCA design

  • Experience with design, integration, and test of Digital circuits

  • Active DOD, SCI, or SSBI clearance



Salary Range: $177,100 USD - $265,700 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
