Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a self-starting, motivated Sr. Principal Numerical Control Programmer to join our dedicated Southern California field site team.

What You’ll Get To Do:

The Sr. Principal Numerical Control Programmer will design, develop, test, deliver, and operate advanced prototype, unique marine systems.   Working at Northrop Grumman means making a direct contribution to mission projects that keep our homeland safe, expanding the boundaries of possibility, and reshaping the world we live in.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Set up and run multiple production machines. Perform machining operations using manual and 3-axis, 5-axis, and CNC Lathe machines to mill, drill, and turn precision parts to MIL-SPEC standards.
  • Work from engineering drawings and/or 3D CAD models to develop or modify NC code to produce and inspect piece parts.  Drawing package interpretation requires knowledge of internal manufacturing processes, drafting standards and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Inspect parts to ensure drawing specifications are met.
  • Create and/or modify custom tooling as necessary to manufacture piece parts per the requirements of the engineering drawings. 
  • Confer with Engineering on possibilities for manufacturing economy through design simplification and standardization of parts. 
  • Confer with machine tool and CAM manufacturers and suppliers to effectively resolve system and controller problems as well as updating machining software.
  • Be responsible for efficiency, safety, design, simplicity and economic operation of NC programs and tools designed to produce piece parts.
  • Be responsible for the maintenance, safe operation, and cleanliness of the machine shop.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS Degree and a minimum of 9 years related experience or a Master’s Degree and a minimum of 7 years related experience. An additional 4 years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience with setup and operation of both manual and numerically controlled mills and lathes
  • Experience within the last 60 days in solo fabrication of parts with multiple machines/machining centers
  • Experience with making proper cutter selections for all types of material but primarily aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium, taking into consideration such factors as speeds, types of cutters, feeds, and control system limitations.
  • Experience with using standard inspection tools and methods in the evaluation of machined parts
  • Experience with supervision of a machine shop and/or other machinists
  • Experience with Mastercam software
  • Experience with interpreting 2D and 3D engineering drawings and models
  • The candidate must be a US citizen and able to obtain a Top Secret clearance


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active Top Secret clearance
  • 10+ years of machine shop experience
  • Experience with SolidWorks 3D CAD software
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products
  • Experience with CMM or portable CMM inspection of machined parts
  • Ability to interpret Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) on engineering drawings

Salary Range: $114,300 USD - $171,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
