The Mechanical Engineering organization team at the Chandler, AZ facility, seeks an Engineer Aeronautical who enjoys problem solving, out-of-the-box thinking, and is interested in advancing technologies from cradle to wide-spread use. 

Current team applications include vibration attenuation, thermal protection, optimized strength to weight ratio, advancements in polymer properties, radiation shielding, and digital simulation.  The team is dedicated to being a resource for fleet advancement with an emphasis on Mechanical Engineering disciplines in a launch vehicle context.  However, advancements to the broader range of products offered by Northrop Grumman will merit attention.

Essential Functions:

This role will focus broadly on research, development, and business capture efforts under the supervision of a Lead Engineer.  Effort will span a wide range of design, integration and test responsibilities in support of experimental research.  Specific tasks can include but are not limited to:

  • Organize, review, and release prototype and production drawing packages to produce components and assemblies for test and production.
  • Size components for vehicle interfaces, available operating envelopes, and performance requirements.
  • Initiate overall design concepts, detailed component designs, material selection, and assembly approaches to fabricate vehicle components and systems.
  • Interpret, select, and apply company/commercial/military specifications and customer requirements to processes, components, and systems to accomplish specific design requirements.
  • Perform stress analysis and evaluate weight and mass properties to size components for available operating envelopes and performance requirements.
  • Supply hands-on engineering support to build, assemble, and test innovative components and hardware prototypes comprised of carbon composite or other materials to resolve design, manufacturing, assembly, quality, and performance issues.
  • Produce engineering documentation, technical reports, and drawings to support design, integration, and testing efforts.
  • Interaction with internal teams in structures, dynamics, instrumentation, and test will be somewhat common, and will include exposure to external customers or technology vendors.

Basic qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) with 2 years of related engineering experience; OR a Master’s degree in STEM with 0 years of related engineering experience
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance
  • Ability to report for full-time on-site work
  • Available to travel 0-10%
  • Proficient in MS PowerPoint, Excel, and Word

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Aerospace or Mechanical engineering
  • Active DoD Secret Security Clearance, or higher
  • Course studies in design, integration, testing, or project coordination of Aerospace vehicles or Mechanical components
  • Design projects or extra-curricular participation in engineering teams with exposure to carbon composites, Additive Manufacturing, virtual reality, manufacturing, proposals, or program management
  • Exposure to research and development methodologies, documentation, and presentations
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge in carbon composites
  • NX or other CAD experience
  • GD&T training
  • Ability to present technical content to peers and project groups
  • Familiarity with Matlab, Python, Linux

Salary Range: $73,400 USD - $110,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
