Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems Division (SSSD) has an opening for a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer/Sr. Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals in the Vehicle & Software Engineering Department. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, California working in the SSSD Resiliency Technology & Products Operating Unit (RT&P).
RT&P provides capabilities, technologies, services, and payloads across the Space Sector, supporting every program phase from resiliency analysis, architecture design, and mission CONOPS through design, integration, delivery, and on-orbit operations. We are seeking a structures design engineer to design both static and deployable structures with a variety of materials including metals and laminated composites. The role will consist of taking initial concepts through detailed design and drawing release as well as some development of new designs. The Mechanical Design Engineer must be comfortable working in a fast-paced rapid development environment.
In addition, this role will be responsible for the following:
- Design, model, and draft using 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software
- Perform requirements definition, conceptual design, preliminary / layout, and detail design, drawing release, design review presentations, and support to fabrication/integration
- Work closely with stress, manufacturing, M&P, and test to develop design requirements, define structural load paths, develop CAD models and prepare engineering drawings to fabricate flight and structural test articles.,
- Interface with other cross-functional groups, customers, and vendors
- Lead and participate in system-level trades to ensure the hardware design meets all physical, mechanical, and environmental requirements
- Supports program milestone reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, IDR, etc.)
- Coordinate with a team of fellow engineers and provide technical oversight as required

This requisition may be filled at either a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer level or Sr. Principal Mechanical Design Engineer level based on the qualifications listed below.
Basic Qualifications for a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university with 5 years of engineering experience OR Master’s Degree in STEM with 3 years of engineering experience OR Ph.D. in STEM with 0 years of engineering experience.
- Candidate must have, and be able to maintain, at least ONE of the following active U.S. Government security clearances: DoD Top Secret with CI Polygraph completed within the last 6 years - OR - SCI access with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI)
- Must be able to obtain and maintain SAP access
- Proficiency in a CAD system
Basic Qualifications for a Sr. Principal Mechanical Design Engineer:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university with 9 years of engineering experience OR Master’s Degree in STEM with 7 years of engineering experience OR Ph.D. in STEM with 4 years of engineering experience.
- Candidate must have, and be able to maintain, at least ONE of the following active U.S. Government security clearances: DoD Top Secret with CI Polygraph completed within the last 6 years - OR - SCI access with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI)
- Must be able to obtain and maintain SAP access
- Proficiency in a CAD system.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior work experience in space subsystems/structures mechanical design or related engineering experience.
- Experience with the design and test of spacecraft deployment mechanisms
- Experience with rapid development space programs
- Candidate will have already passed a CI polygraph exam with active SCI
- Proficiency in CATIA V5
- Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
